Manchester,

I don't at all disagree with what you are saying with respect to the club preparation paving the way for ODP. And after going back to look at the 92 pool list again, it does have more influence from the 92 teams than I initially remembered from reading late one night. Not at all meant to slight any group/team.

I also believe your correct in what you said about the bridge participation. However, I also know that some of the pool game selections for the younger players on the Boys side had Bridge players that also show up on the academy rosters, which will at some point render them ineligible for ODP.

The fact that it is not happening on the girls side could be that the girls teams are not having the same success as the boys in being regionally known.

Bear i dont think firstouch was talking about sc teams in general.the charlotte soccer club 91 girls won the region III east this past year and only one girl got held over.i just wasnt sure what how good your club team was had to do with being heldover.we know sc is not the powerhouse of girls soccer.
you do make good points though.
we think it was all bad for the sc girls this year and it was compared to last year.my question would be how many girls got looked at.i only know the 92s and there were 4 out of 18 girls that played in a pool game.
one was a sc goalie.i saw the 3 92 goalies that were held over at they were good.for a sc goalie to make the pool game i assume that puts her in the top 4 or 5.that is a big accomplishment with all the goalies that was there.

Bear,

That's correct. The Academy originally said teams would be comprised of players by the year they were born. Instead some of their teams have morphed into looking more like a varsity teams with players of four different ages on the roster. We lost some quality players to the academy from the 92 boys, but it's great to see there were players who had not played ODP, but were playing at a high level in club, who got involved this year.

That made all the difference in the world. Imagine what might have happened had these players gotten involved a couple of years ago?

Something to think about for those behind us.

But this discussion has nothing to do with USSF Academy. The debate is.....why 14-15 SC boys in the 91-94 age group made region pool and only 1 SC girls did.

Academy has no bearing on that......

I disagree with my culinary friend Marcus Aurelius on the relationship of club success to ODP success. I know there are exceptions.....club teams that are very successful without having any or many Grade A level players.

But....players win games. Teams that win at the highest level do so in most cases because they have the best players. For whatever reason.....the top team, top 2 teams in the state for 92 girls haven't been competitive regionally at the highest level. 91 girls fit in there a little too, but not as starkly as the 92 girls.

States that have 3-4-5 really, really good Club teams probably do at placing kids in the region pool than states with 1-2 really good teams.

And states that don't have a really really good team.....

club success has nothing to do with odp no matter what people think.region staff may look at what state you are from but not club.
sc hasnt shown to well reginally but i must remind you of one thing.the july before this odp season started the cesa 91 girls went to reginals in oklahoma and went 2-2.not a bad showing for a sc team.that is the same team that finished 500 in region III play that year.also beat charlotte soccer club 4-0.still it does not have any bearing on odp.
that is what i like about odp.on a region level everyone is on the same level field.yes the fla and texas girls may have a heads up but they are good.

Bear,

No doubt 91 and 92 boys did extraordinary....but 94 boys placed 3 kids in the region pool.

So the disparity between girls success and boys success is magnified by those two age groups, not determined by those two age groups.

And I struggle to think that more high quality girls aren't playing ODP than boys.

All the same issues/reasons/distractions apply!! Plus boys have to deal with USSF Academy siphoning off players.

Big Daddy,

I didn't mean to imply anything negative with respect to the 94 boys, and honestly didn't know much about the 94 boys pool selections. The 91's and 92's each had 7 in the pool. I guess you could take those away and the disparity would still exist that 3 of the 94 pool players represent a disparity. However, this disparity will cease when the 2 Bridge players have to choose between ODP and Academy, since they are both on the posted Academy roster.

Now, if you look at the year comparison that I posted concerning the relative success of the 91 Boys and the years that was achieved, the 94 Boys, like the 93 girls, are at a similar point the 91 Boys were, at the same times. In fact, the 94 Boys are ahead of where the 91 Boys were, and the challenge will be to keep the group moving forward.

Bear,

Nothing negative at all. It is simply weird that so few girls were selected....whether the number is 15-1 or 3-1. One.....is the loneliest number that could ever be.

Ooops. Sorry about that.

The Bridge kids will probably be Academy next year. But there will be other kids in this age group that step up. Some CESA kids played last year...didn't play this year. Wouldn't shock me to see them back next year.

I just think that there should be 2-4 SC kids in every region pool. When there isn't......you need to go chasing to figure out why? Best players didn't play? How come? Team never practiced? Get a new coach. Better player hurt? Uh, don't get hurt.

But no way you should have 1 girl in 3 age groups.

I'm not saying that club teams have anything to do with ODP selection or region pool selection directly. Kids are chosen, not Club teams. I dig that.

But....great club teams have great players. Great players get selected for region pool. States with multiple great teams are likely to have multiple great players.

States without great club teams......may struggle at ODP becasue they don't have the great individual players.

I think there MAY be a relationship between the fact that SC doesn't have a dominant 92 girls team.....and the fact that no girls from that age group made region pool.

How about the 93 boys? Have they placed anybody in the pool in the 3 years? How many games have they even won? That seems to be a forgotten group. This thread is about hilarious - considering how South Carolina ranks at the bottom of just about everything in the country except STD's. I think we place about like we should expect in the region pools and in the win -loss columns. How can we realistically compete with states like Florida and Texas when their population is so much higher than ours - hello - population equals more kids to choose from. More kids probably means a little more talent odds would say. We seem to be doing a decent job of competing with the Alabama's and Mississippi's. The bigger states simply give us something to shoot for. It's like a 1A school going against a 4A school. Quite frankly I think we are making remarkable progress in SC soccer - let's be thankful of that and thank the Heise's, Savitz's,CESA's, BFA's, CUFC's and even your local YMCA for all they are doing to make it happen.
