We just plain ole no good never gonna mount to nuthin south cackalacky.

No one says we should win regions and compete for national championships or dominate the ODP selection process.

I think people are saying.....how can we place 1 girl into the region pool out of 3 or 4 age groups when the city of Charlotte placed about 10. I think 93 CSC Blue put more girls thru than SC did.

If its true that the 93 boys team hasn't ever put one in.....why?

Last year the '91 Boys advanced to Nationals. Last year the '92 Boys may have won a single game. Until this year, the '92 Boys had only one holdover, ever! This year they were loaded with talent because they got new players involved and they won their first three games, allowing only 1 goal. Teams who win get their players noticed, plain and simple.

Get your very best players involved and go to region camp with a mindset of accepting nothing less than wins. Every player must have the sense of urgency in all thirds of the field. It can't all be done by the coach. Parents and players have to understand the dynamics and get everyone to participate in order to succeed.

There obviously are no quotas to fill and there shouldn't be. As much as we could try to justify why there should be, it's simply a matter of who is better than the other guy or girl and who shows up.

Is it fair? Absolutely!

This 92 Girls Region III ODP team definitely has a "Texas Twist" to it:

Texas produces outstanding players, as seen by their dominance during club Regionals on the boys side. It only makes sense those players would drive the success of the odp teams. We must work harder and smarter to get better.

SC must win games early to get noticed early. That takes more commitment.

The 92 Girls team final decisions were made by the National team coach. He was the guest coach for FL. Several positions were not even open to be won in AL due to several National and National team pool players being involved with their club teams at Nationals. Ten positions that were availible last year were held for these players. In other words certain positions had been filled before camp started.

I understand that they are not looking to fill a whole squad.I would just like to see some girls get held over for the experience and training aspect..To have a girl on the National team from S.C.would be great but looks to be unrealistic for now..Have we developed a reputation of poor play in the coaches eyes?

ODP - advice for youngsters

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For those of you who are now entering the age to begin "trying out" for ODP here are a few observations to keep in mind
Advantages
a) Regional play can be competitive
b) Boost of confidence for the kids (and parents unfortunately)
c) Can quickly identify who has the better club team in tha age group as most of the kids will gravitate to this team
d) Additional soccer never hurts
e) Additional practice each week
Disadvantages
a) Teams tend to stay the same year after year thus not a lot of turn over (can be good or bad)
b) It can get pricey and time consuming (weekends etc)
c) Typically it is NOT a place for good training
d) Bigger clubs do have an advantage in the politics arena (make sure your coach calls)
e) At older age groups it has become watered down with the better kids leaving
f) It can be a recruiting tool
g) ODP has lost its appeal recently with the addition of other options
h) College recruiting has nothing to do with ODP and was once used to boost the credibility of the program.
In summary, it is a good program which is one of many options available for the kids. It hasnt turned out to be what it was designated to morph into thus the reason for other programs. Not a bad option at young ages but by U15-U16 it is time to move to bigger and better things since the better players will have move on (National Team, Elite Club Teams,Developmental Academy etc).

With the size of the talent pool in the US, it's great to see more options for players. Opportunities such as USYSA ODP, USL ODP (Super Y) and the USSF Academy are all programs competing for top players. We have participated at length in the first two of these and in my opinion as long as top level coaches can be found scouting talent, then all is well.

But this discussion has nothing to do with USSF Academy. The debate is.....why 14-15 SC boys in the 91-94 age group made region pool and only 1 SC girls did.

Academy has no bearing on that......

I disagree with my culinary friend Marcus Aurelius on the relationship of club success to ODP success. I know there are exceptions.....club teams that are very successful without having any or many Grade A level players.

But....players win games. Teams that win at the highest level do so in most cases because they have the best players. For whatever reason.....the top team, top 2 teams in the state for 92 girls haven't been competitive regionally at the highest level. 91 girls fit in there a little too, but not as starkly as the 92 girls.

States that have 3-4-5 really, really good Club teams probably do at placing kids in the region pool than states with 1-2 really good teams.

And states that don't have a really really good team.....

club success has nothing to do with odp no matter what people think.region staff may look at what state you are from but not club.
sc hasnt shown to well reginally but i must remind you of one thing.the july before this odp season started the cesa 91 girls went to reginals in oklahoma and went 2-2.not a bad showing for a sc team.that is the same team that finished 500 in region III play that year.also beat charlotte soccer club 4-0.still it does not have any bearing on odp.
that is what i like about odp.on a region level everyone is on the same level field.yes the fla and texas girls may have a heads up but they are good.

I'm not saying that club teams have anything to do with ODP selection or region pool selection directly. Kids are chosen, not Club teams. I dig that.

But....great club teams have great players. Great players get selected for region pool. States with multiple great teams are likely to have multiple great players.

States without great club teams......may struggle at ODP becasue they don't have the great individual players.

I think there MAY be a relationship between the fact that SC doesn't have a dominant 92 girls team.....and the fact that no girls from that age group made region pool.

if all of what you say is true and im not sure it is then why did nc not have more players held over.i think for the 92 girls there was 1 from casl and 1 from charlotte soccer club.some from those same teams are 91s but i do not know if any were heldover.if they are great teams with great players then why is nc and ga for that matter being over looked.
i think it goes back to club soccer having nothing to do with odp.like i said earlier,if that was the case then odp would just be about the players from the top few teams in region league play and the rest could stay home.
it looks like firstouch has the same views as you.it is obvious he/she thinks the 1 csc player was a bench player in club ball and shouldnt be held over along with a few others.
