Part of the answer is painfully simple:
Instead of having high school athletes "major" in eligibility -- thereby taking a bunch of classes that don't pass clearing house muster -- how about identifying them at the "B" team level (middle school) and getting them on track?
Then, instead of investing time and stipend on a de facto NCAA eligibility coach, how about teaching prospective college athletes not only the content, but the strategies needed to survive standardized exams?
How about guidance counselors actually doing their jobs?
How about reducing/eliminating fourth-block varsity athletics and mandating study halls?
As it stands now, too many coaches are worried about keeping kids eligible to play in high school instead of helping them
prepare for the next level of LIFE.
