Can anyone define the celebration yellow card for me? I understand taunting or excessive clebrations.

Had a player yellow carded tonight for scoring a really good team goal and he ran toward our sideline, away from all opposing players, and dove(rainy night) at our fans. got up and hugged his teammates. Any harm in that? Sorry us lil private schools might have missed that memo. And yes I sat in that Rules Clinic put on by the SCHSL for 8+ years so I know all that info......If you asked a question about throw ins in that meeting you need not reply to this

Sort of taking the fun out of the game right. These kids bust their butts training, running, playing club ball, and in the classroom to do what, SCORE A GOAL!!! Come on you got students and fans sitting in the rain. They want a lil entertainment. Thats the point of the entire game. Just seems a bit harsh for me.

thanks

Well said Will. No question that's a rediculous reason for a card. I hope your boys came out with a win tonight.

Nothing like a lumbering 350 lb dinosaur making a tackle for a 2 yard loss (by stumbling forwards mind you) and celebrating as if he had just won The World Cup ... too funny! We hear you WE!

I definitely agree with you will, as a player i enjoy celebrating goals. There's no better feeling. Personally I don't think any celebrations should be cardable unless they're of like a vulgar nature, you know what i mean?

1. If the player that scored the goal and celebrated doesnt score that many goals i think it should be alright.
2. If a player that usually scores goals in games and the game is a tight match that is hard fought i think its ok.

If your team is up by multiple goals and you have a player that usually scores alot and he celebrates, i dont think its alright. There is no need to celebrate a goal that gives your team a 3 goal lead or so on that is just rubbing it in thier face.

Coach,

In the High School league book check out Rule 12-8 (misconduct) under ART. 2 (a).

"A player shall be disqualified and the number of players on the field shall not be reduced for":

a. any delayed, excessive or prolonged act(s) by which a player(s) attempts to focus attention upon himself/herself and/or prohibits a timely restart of the game.

The referees have a hard enough time interpreting the rules of the game let alone if someone is a high scorer.

In last nights game I felt that the ref was trying to maintain control over the game by sending a message to the players. It may have been too harsh but I felt the refs controlled the game pretty well. Yes it was physical but sloppy games like that can get out of hand in a hurry and tempers flare.

The bigger issue must be for the high school league to realize that soccer should have 3 refs at all games. This would limit the frustrations of so many players on the pitch and surely reduce the crap calls that are all too common. I know we are lucky to have refs now and the cost is always a factor. A solution just requires thought!

Although one sided the game was fun to watch. CN really played soccer and picked AC Flora's defense apart. The rain really didn't pick up until the end of the 1st half and by that time the game was decided.

my guess (like what i think soccer16 was trying to say) is that this rule requires one less thing for a ref to interpret (that's gotta be a good thing, right?)

i've seen many, many pages on this board dedicated to this discussion. just think about all the possibilities: it's okay if the player runs towards his own fans; unacceptable if he is facing the opposition; he is allowed to hug his teammates, but no one in the stands; the player is allowed a diving header, but only if it's raining and the field is slick; allowable if your team is either losing at the time, or winning by fewer than three goals; it's more okay if the celebrating player does not normally score for his team, less okay if he does; no vulgar language allowed, i.e., "heck yes" is allowable, "hell yes" is not; and on and on and on...

do you REALLY want to see either:
1) a rule written specific enough that anyone can easily decide whether the celebration is acceptable or not, OR
2) a rule written in such a way that a referee is given some amount of leeway, based on his/her best judgement?

personally, i prefer it the way it is now; and if it's an important enough goal, give the player the go-ahead to celebrate and just take the yellow.

so how is a referee supposed to know who the teams leading scorer is or if a player has scored a goal at all? There is no way.

Personally, I agree Will as long as the celebration does not demote the other team. Running to your fans I feel is acceptable. I guess the idea is that celebrating excessively is bad sportsmanship on behalf of the player. I think if a goal is scored, the player and his team should be able to celebrate it.

Was this against Flora?
