I think that this is where the whole coaching philosophy comes into play. I've been fortunate enough to be able to be able to evolve in my coaching over the few years I've been in. I was once a big believer in making adjustments for the team from the sideline, thus leading to a lot of, um, vocal activity during the game and hoarse mornings after. I've fount that as I began to let go and trust the players to do what they do - play the game - that the players begin to do a much better job of making in-game decisions and utilize individual skill and creativity, one of the big keys to getting noticed by next-level coaches.

I have discovered my most powerful game-day coaching tool is a pen and a legal pad. And I find nothing redeeming in demeaning players on the field (or at any other time for that matter). I should seek to have them aspire to greater skill in and passion for the game.

Just a couple pennies.

There's a difference between being a vocal coach and encouraging your players and pointing things out for them to pay attention to and being purposefully degrading and humiliating.

I love a coach who coaches from the sidelines and points out offsides or tells you to look to switch fields or mark up, to a certain extent. S/he shouldn't be yelling the whole game, but rather sporadically pointing out things being missed so that the mistakes can be recognised and corrected as you go--I could never remember specific mistakes post-game and so never learned from them when dad brought them up later. I also think there's no place for a coach who would intentionally break down his players mid-game with derogatory comments. I have never once seen that work effectively in all my years of playing girls' soccer.

My best coach coached from the sidelines and it was awesome, but he could also get very mad at half time and sometimes curse or point out specific breakdowns we HAD to fix, but he never once made anyone feel less than they were.

Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; [it] is also what it takes to sit down and listen.

I think most coaches at the Premier level do care about every touch-some just portray themselves differently, and to each his own-I was just stating that my kid doesn't respond to negative comments being screamed at them. Maybe some kids like it...or adjust to it. As I said before-no one is going to change anyone's opinion and everyone is entitled to their own.

It's premier league, the girls need to deal with different coaching styles, guess we see it a little different, that's ok, I just love a coach that gives a dang about every pass, touch, and possession.

You know my daughters have coaches that care about every pass, touch, and possession. And yet they have never demeaned my child. I've heard my kids name yelled out during a game - and it was because of a mistake my child made. Yes, the coach told her something that was wrong, but he managed to do it without nastiness in his voice and without humiliating my child.

I don't know what coach they are talking about so I couldn't say whether this is the coaches usual demeanor or not.

I think the bit about it being R3PL is a copout. Coaches shouldn't get a free pass on their treatment of players just because it is at a higher league. Basically you are saying the coach can't take the pressure of R3PL so he lashes out at the players.

I know of a coach that has coached a girls team in this state since they were U11's. He treated the girls horribly, and to this day there is just a handful of girls left from the original team. They struggle with numbers every single year. He treats the girls poorly and they in turn treat eachother poorly. (Before anyone say why don't the girls quit, well, I know of at least one girl whose parents won't let her quit. It is a sad situation.)

Anyway, it culminated last week into two of those girls in a fist fight rolling around on the ground pummeling each other with fists.

So no, I don't agree at all with a coach treating players with disrespect or humiliation. There are too many successful coaches in professional, college and high school sports who have shown that degrading and humiliating players is a sign of poor coaching.

AGain, I don't know what coach is being talked about, but if it is true that they can't seem to communicate coaching advice without doing so in a negative manner, I do not think they are much of a coach. Who cares if they win, look at the cost to the kids if that is what it takes to get a "w".

I like a coach that coaches during the week with a game plan and let's the players perform on the weekends..I am sure it's hard not to yell when the team is not doing what is done at practice..but if you have to yell..Then you don't have soccer players..You have soccer robots..Comprehending is part of the game..

I do know the coach that you all are talking about. Every year, I see girls come back from college to see him. Every year I see girls fall just short of begging him for extra training and I've never seen him say no. Every year I have seen him "demean" and "berate" players (as you call it). Yet, I don't know of another coach whose players think as highly of him/her as this coach's players think of him. I've also never seen a coach have so many players think it is a good idea to drive hours one way to play on a team, as this one does. They must all be gluttons for punishment. Silly girls.

Agree totally. And a coach that expects 100% from players.

I've seen the coach that seems to be the focus of this thread. If it is indeed this coach, he is the best youth soccer coach I've ever seen. There have been games where he sits the entire game and the only thing that got him off the bench was poor play/decisions by his team. I don't know him personally, my kids don't nor have they ever played for him or his club. But many times I wished we had the opportunity. And I have been at college games where he was in the stands with his team, and you would see numerous players go out of their way to come up to talk with him.

I guess some players wouldn't accept the "demeaning" criticism, but there seem to be a lot that do. More than likely the player he berated will be there as long as the coach thinks she's good enough for his team.
