I think this tournament is great to give a lot of middle of the pack and up and coming teams a chance to shine. Do you have the fancy 4A rankings and out of state prestige as Palmetto Cup, no but calling it an "alternative" makes it sound like it's not good enough.

I think in a year that not many teams can afford travel, this is an unbelievable turn out which will have some great battles. You do have 2 teams from the state Semifinals in 3A, one of the best 1A teams in Ac Magnet, a great team in Emerald, and Hammond who has a shot to win SCISA. Not quite an alternative. Just goes to show Airport is closing that gap in the West Columbia area.

But I think there are more than a few teams in this 18 team field, who could play in the Palmetto Cup, which has dropped from 16 to 12 teams.

Alternative isn't a good or bad connotation, just that, an alternative. If teams are looking for the prestige and that level of competition, then, the ASI isn't where it is.

The question was, will it compete with, and my opinion is, not for the teams that traditionally go to the Palmetto Cup. If that is somehow saying that the ASI is "not good enough", then that's your interpretation. By the beginning of your post, you basically acknowledge my point, but honestly, I thought I did it more tactfully than calling teams middle of the pack and up and coming.

I agree, it is a competitive field, that will produce some good soccer matches. Unfortunately, 4 of the best teams in the tournament play each other on Thursday night.

Bear- I agree with you about 4 of the best teams playing but just be aware we have a lot to take into account when making schedules as in who can play on Thursday night, avoiding region and rivalry match ups, and earliest match times on Friday.

There is not such thing as a perfect scenario but we do the best we can and anyone who has ever run a tournament can surely agree with that. I know you didn't mean anything by calling it an alternative . We are proud to have 17 teams traveling to AHS to play with our boys. We hope everyone enjoys the tournament, that is our main focus.

I understand the headaches the organizers have when doing these things. The Thursday comment was just an observation.

I think this is a great endeavor. Just shows me how much soccer has grown in the Mildands area. This tourney doesn't go head-to-head with the Palmetto Cup and offers that side of the river more high school soccer. A win-win for all.
