Just plain don't understand the concept behind the Academy (or refuse to accept the value of it)
.......or do understand the concept behind the Academy and feel that:
1. There's more to life than my kids soccer 8 days a week.
2. The money tree in the backyard is a little bare these days due to this great economy we are currently living in.
Seriously, as much as I am a proponent of the Academy I believe without a doubt there are kids out there who are better soccer players - with more God given talent and better work ethics - probably playing on a challenge club than kids currently rostered on some of the Academy teams.
Why? Their parents work life and home life do not allow the committment it takes (not to mention financial committment)to play Academy ball.
Agree with almost everything you wrote. Almost....
Comments:
--Kids/parents that will drive from out of town to go to Greenville are just as obsessviely nuts as Academy kids/parents. Academy is not much of a change for them.
--Personal comments from this past fall.....can't say I saw a bunch of u16 SCSCL kids that were Academy ready. 1 or 2 on some teams? Maybe. 0 on most teams.

Bebe,
I do not disagree with you regarding players, and I'll even go a step further and say that I'd be willing to bet good money that there are kids who are now playing challenge who could play on any team in this state.
But, regarding the other, you might not have noticed that I said "if any parent is currently driving their child past an Academy team to play for cesa."
Believe me, I know exactly what you mean about the commitment (time, money and otherwise). My spouse and I are extremely lucky that we are able to afford this (although my car will probably have a half-million miles on it by the time we have enough money to replace it, and my yard is suffering terribly, not to mention my ever-expanding honey-do list), we both have fairly flexible work schedules, we have a fantastic carpool coordinator and our other child is no longer living at home full-time (and I have probably left out several other reasons) We try to take none of our blessings for granted.
Now that you mention it, though, if a person is determined enough, they should be able to make it work. The Academy offers scholarships, and most people live close enough to another player to catch rides. I'm not saying that every single person out there is going to be able to do it, but if you want to badly enough, I believe many more cases than you think can do it.
But, again, as I mentioned, if you are driving past an Academy team to play for cesa, you are already dealing with most of the same issues that you would be with Academy.

Big Daddy Agnew, it is hard to take you seriously. Based on your comments, you obviously have a very limited understanding of what it would take to develop a high caliber player. As with many parents, you have an opinion and should have the opportunity to voice it. I would caution others to take what you say with a grain of salt.

Except for there aren't many CESA players/parents playing league games in the Miami area or showcases in Phoenix. Sure these aren't weekly occurences for Academy teams but they sure could affect family finances.
As far as your 1 maybe 2 kids on SCSCL teams kids being Academy ready - I agree with your numbers - but there a select few out there. Reasons they are where they are could possibly be what I listed - financial or family committment.

Longtime occasional observer, but first time poster ...
1. There's more to life than my kids soccer 8 days a week.
2. The money tree in the backyard is a little bare these days due to this great economy we are currently living in.
Isn't this the truth? Remember when practices were on Tuesday/Thursday with a game on the weekend? This is when soccer was simple.
I've had three kids play soccer - two from my previous marriage and now one with my current marriage. It's night and day between how it used to be and how it is today. I've been shocked this season as my two grown kids played when fees were restricted to registration and minimal travel and tourneys.
Now, it's a sizable amount of money just to play and then the "extras" such as Academy, ODP, soccer camps (which I question their use/existence anymore with the exception of money-makers), uniforms, tryout fees, etc. It's really amazing how the landscape has changed in 15 years!

Belligerent, and your name does fit you well, you are another one who obviously is living in fantasy land. It is nice to hear that you and your family are enjoying your soccer experience. What specifically do you feel makes for a top level soccer experience? The training, coaching and competition that you reference so often must be astounding to witness. One can only hope that the rest of the state can struggle along and manage to churn out just a few college level players, a few top R3PL finishes, the odd state championship and a regional championship here and there as well.

I'm sorry that CUFC 15, 16, 17 and 18 girls weren't beaten by larger margins. It is interesting that in your opinion, anyone who beats your club by "only a goal" must not be very good.

Belligerent, I don't get the Kool Aid part. If you go back and look at this thread I believe you will see that I posted on the 13th page. Now, I would like for you to go back and re read this thread and see how many anti-cesa posts there are and how many cesa apologists there are. This brings up my next point. You mention that there are two scufc players at img right now. That's great. CESA has a player down there too called in for the U15 National TEAM and has made every national camp that has been offered. How come there were no Kool Aid drinkers posting this on the board.
Are the two kids at camp now in the academy or were they identified other ways. CESA does not get on here and list every time one of their kids is on. Your brand of academy is self- promotion. If you want to tag yourself with the Texans and CASL go ahead, some simpletons might buy in to it. Academy has its own merits but why bash what CESA does.
Bridge and CUFC were formed to compete with CESA- it never happened with the exception of the 18s. What has changed. You have the same coaches, the same facilities, the same leadership, the same players, etc. but now that you are academy you have recreated yourself. Academy might be the way to go, but for you to come here and say that no one should drive past academy to go to cesa is stupid. When the players start going to academy and not going to irrelevant cesa, then come back to me.

I can only speak for our experiences. If I roll up club fees and team fees at top level clubs, then roll in ODP fees......its no different than Academy costs. Travel to Phoenix and Miami part of the rolled up cost.
A lot of money? Yup....but not different than what we've been paying.
