New info on all-state selection committee "no shows"

Being a Spring Valley soccer player, and in Region IV, when I saw the thread "4-A All State Region IV and V representatives a no show" I was a bit concerned. Not because I necessarily think that one of our players would have made all-state, but because I was confused, especially considering that I know my coach would have done something if he could have, and the posts sounded very accusatory. This being true, naturally I asked Coach Lea about it. Coach Lea is not involved in scsoccer.com and only reads the posts once a year.. for viking cup. However, he received various phone calls and emails about the thread because others were concerned about what was said about him and the Region IV coaches in general and thought that they should let him know. It was then that he did go read the posts and was a little upset about them and how people were addressing the issue. Like I said before, with him not being involved in scsoccer, I offered that I would post something for him. We started a new thread so that those who posted on the previous one would certainly see this. Basically, and I don't blame him, he wants to explain a little bit about what happened in his case and sent me an email with what he wanted to say about the matter. It proceeds as follows:

Also, my personal view on this.....I do not participate on message boards for a variety of reasons. I do not enjoy the tone (much fighting, bickering, name-calling, etc.) of many of the conversations. Also, many of the posts are done with little or no fact checking (incomplete at best) prior to writing (case in point - the thread you brought to my attention). Finally, I just don't want to be involved in the negativity that tends to permeate many of the discussion threads. Again, this thread serves as a perfect example....I could either play the game and respond to negative\false accusations (and I mean those that are constantly leveled at a multitude of players, coaches, and fans) or simply not dignify them with a response. I choose the latter. If someone really wants to know what I think\know\did\etc., that person will call or email me. I'm pretty easy to find. I coach because I love soccer, the players, the competition, the fun, the friendships, and all of the other positive aspects of high school sports. I try to stay out of the battles that take place behind the scenes.

His email also includes why he wasn't present at the meeting. He was invited, like most years, to attend the Clash of the Carolina's meeting, N/S meeting, and the all state meeting. He responded to all three invitations and even sent a second email to Kevin Heise with why he could not attend the All State meeting and to remind him of this. Therefore, it seems there was some lack of communication and organization on the selection of committee members. We aren't trying to point any fingers, just remind everyone that you might necessarily have all the information. I hope this doesn't cause more controversy, we truly aren't trying to. I just wanted to give him a chance to have a word in the matter.

couldnt have said it better. i absolutely agree, that was totally uncalled for with the accusations against certain coaches not showing up. half of the time people are mistaken or mis informed on matters like this. its a shame people post comments like that before they get all the facts straight.

SVGOAL10...Thank you for your response. I am glad that you were concerned when you saw the thread I started on "Region IV and V represntatives a no show". I hope that you were concerned that your nominated SV teammates were not properly represented at the All-State selections. Your concern obviously prompted you to question Coach Lea as to why people were talking about him. I appreciate that Coach Lea has allowed you to write a response to my question. Since Coach Lea has heard about it, and read the original posts, I would hope he in turn asks the question to those other coaches, and to Kevin/Kyle Heise to find out what happened. Apparently, what we have here is a failure to communicate. There is no need to explain why Coach Lea either does or does not frequent this board, but if Coach Lea only checks this board once or twice a year, then I would hope that the organizers of these committees are not relying on this board to communicate to the individual coaches. I started that thread because I had a valid question and I truly wanted to know what happened. It obviously started people talking. There were a lot of responders that went off on their own agenda, as often happens when someone asks a questions or brings up a point. (I guess that is just one part of the "freedom of speech" we all enjoy by living here in the USA.) It doesn't negate the fact that there were at least 9 Region IV and V players that did not have a representative present at that meeting to give "insight" as to why they should have been selected. The players that were selected are of course, worthy of being selected but I believe that the All-State team would have had Region IV and V players on it (my opinion), as well, had there been a representative in attendance.
I do believe after hearing from Coach Lea that he did what he was supposed to do, in notifying Kevin Heise that he would be unable to make the meeting. Not sure what is supposed to happen after that....alternate???

I only hope that by bringing up this discussion this year,
that it is not allowed to happen next year...very disappointing for the players involved.

My reply will be simple for what it's worth. Coach Lea informed me earlier in the week that he would not be able to attend and that he had secured a replacement. The replacement informed me at 4:00 a.m. on Sunday morning that he could not attend -- which I did not get until "during our all-state meeting" of which I printed the response and took to the 4A committee in another classroom. That's it! No conspiracy, sorry!

We tried to select coaches on the following criteria -- SCHSSCA/SCACA membership; previous year/current year success; and service to SCHSSCA! That's it, no big secret.

We did have more than 50 coaches in attendance to select the various all-state teams. However, in my honest opinion if the Midlands folks want more representation, then the parents of those schools should not operate witch-hunts to oust proven, qualified and dedicated coaches, which in my estimation has happened at several Columbia-area high schools in the past year alone. It's sad that these parents have wielded this power to get rid of good folks, but so be it. That's the world we live in, but when they opt for this manner, then they accept the consequences of what non-membership means.

In addition, if the argument is coming from an Irmo parent, which I'm pretty sure it is, then please explain to me what attributes were exhibited by your daughter during the 2010 spring HS season to warrant All-State after a fourth place region finish and barely .500 record. I hate to be curt, but I'm tired of the innuendo and bashing of good people for personal gain and aggrandizement.

The players that WERE selected for all-state are deserving and should not be subjected to this questionning.

I happen to be an Irmo parent and don't appreciate the innuendo that "Mary" is an Irmo parent-you make it sound like all the Irmo folks are whining about everything. My daughter was nominated for All-State,didn't make it and has not lost any sleep over it-neither have I. The girls that made it were deserving of it-just my "Irmo two cents worth".
I think her main concern,once she actually gets to it,is the fact that the Region representatives did not show up for the meeting.They didn't,it's over and done,so let's move on. My daughter was glad for the recognition from her coach and THAT is all that matters..can we close this thread now?????

Just wanted to take the time to thank the Heise brothers for all the good work they do for SC HS soccer. Thanks for providing an outlet like the SCSoccer forum for people to converse about the great game of Soccer.

You are so right...sad but true.Just wanted to get the word out that not all of the Irmo parents feel the same...some folks take it so personal and it doesn't have to be that way. Let them be kids and enjoy the game-it will be over before we know it-then what will they complain about??

Thanks Kevin and Kyle for all that you do. I have 2 boys in soccer, club/school.....1 graduating hs and will be playing at Lander this fall. Thanks again guys.
