Anderson Independent Mail -- Paul Strelow

As Dick Smith watched coverage of John Woodens death, he considered it symbolic.

Another iconic old-school coach has said his goodbyes.

Smith is out as T.L. Hannas boys soccer coach, having been fired after he declined to resign last week from the program he founded 32 years ago.

I dont think my coaching was in question, and I dont think my character is in question, Smith said. It would have been nice to walk out on my own terms from what I consider my program.

But I had a great run. There are a lot more positives than negatives.

Smith has been replaced by the schools girls soccer coach, Craig Joyner, coincidentally a sophomore starter on Smiths first T.L. Hanna squad in 1978.

Katelyn Whitaker, the Yellow Jackets JV girls coach the past two years, has been named interim girls varsity coach. Whitaker is uncertain whether she will return to the school, athletics director Kenya Fouch said.

While the wheels for Smiths exodus might have begun in motion last year when he lost his teaching job and entered retirement, the 59-year-old said he was blindsided by the move.

Smith was informed of the decision Wednesday, the day after the teams postseason banquet. Fouch suggested he wanted to go in a different direction, Smith said.

Said Fouch: We decided it was time for a change. We told him things might have gotten a little stagnant, and we thought it was in the best interest of the kids and the right thing to do.

The credibility of Smiths overall body of work goes without dispute.

This season, he was believed to have become just the fifth soccer coach in state history to record 400 career victories. He was among the first five inductees named to the South Carolina High School Soccer Coaches Association Hall of Fame, and he was inducted into the S.C. Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame last July.

His boys teams won two state titles 4A in 1980, 3A in 1996. In his 32 seasons, the Yellow Jackets went 400-251-13.

However, T.L. Hanna has posted three consecutive losing seasons, going 8-13-1 this past year while dropping nine of its last 10 matches entering the playoffs.

Smith also admitted to having some run-in disagreements with administration in the recent past but said they were ultimately handled professionally.

I told (Fouch) I thought they were making a mistake, Smith said. If I didnt think I could still get it done, I promise you I would have stood up and said so.

Smith said the program could not have been passed into better hands than those of Joyner, who has positioned the schools girls team into annually one of the top five squads in the state.

Joyner went 54-16-4 in three of seasons as the girls coach, winning the region and reaching the state quarterfinals each year.

This is my dream job, Joyner said. I consider it one of the best jobs in the state, and Dickie Smith made it that way.

This is a soccer-rich area, and the boys want to do better and are excited about returning a good senior class.

Smith, who has spent 35 years at T.L. Hanna all together, was given the job at its inception by longtime athletic director and football coach Jim Fraser for no other reason than it was mandated every faculty coach had to work with two different sports.

Seven years later (1985), he got the girls program off the ground as well.

T.L. Hanna principal Sheila Hilton declined to speak to the reasons for Smiths departure specifically, saying only she makes all personnel decisions with the students best interests in mind.

We honored Dickie several different ways this year, and his record, Im not sure anyone in the state could top it, Hilton said.

Renko writes:

Coach Smith was old-school, he expected the best from his players, on the field and off the field and the success shows. He was tough but he loved his players and it is a shame after giving 32 years of your life to one school, he couldn't go out in a better way. Coach Smith - thanks for all the lives you touched and changed.

Coach Dickie Smith has done more for S.C. high school soccer than any other person in this state! Everyone who knows me, knows the kind of respect and admiration I have for Coach Smith and the program he has run at Hanna. He is "old school" and that's a rare positive trait in today's "satisfy me first" society.

Congratulations to Dickie on a wonderful coaching (and teaching) career and for dedicating your life to the betterment of prep soccer in the Palmetto State!

"Old School"
Old School is a moniker that once was highly respected in athletics. Sadly, it has lost some of its intended praise. Old School means, hard work. It means no excuses. And, it means rolling up your sleeves and getting dirty. Old School also means doing things the right way, with character, knowing the difference between right and wrong and choosing to do the right thing even when it is not the popular thing. Old School is John Wooden, Vince Lombardi, and Tom Landry of old. And it is Tony Dungy. And it is Dick Smith. From the very beginning, back in 1989, when I first met Dick (and Radio) it was clear to me that Coach Smith was a man of expertise and of character. There are many out there who are one or the other, but precious few who are both. While it is as certain as death and taxes, that as coaches we will all be replaced some day,I can only hope and pray that I leave a lasting impact on SC soccer anything close to what Dickie has left.
Dickie, I am sorry for the way things have played out. But have no doubts that you will continue to fight the good fight here in SC. Well done good and faithful servant

"Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled. In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us."
Titus 2 6-8

With much respect and admiration,
Wayne

Sounds like Dickie Smith is another "Bobby Bowden"!

There is nothing left to say except, T.L. Hanna is not only losing a good coach, but also an amazing role model who held young men accountable and did things the right way. The direction Hanna has chosen to go is the wrong one and Craig Joyner will have huge shoes to fill following one of South Carolina's BEST!!!!

CRAZIE:

Was it the parents and players that ran him out or his win loss record over the last six years? Can an old school style coach win in todays world ? I think yes, if not it is a very sad comment on todays society. Good luck coach Smith, maybe CASA can use your talents and you can continue molding young people.

Who is Craig Joyner?

Replacing a Hall of Famer with Craig Joyner? Really?

Honestly, it makes no difference if it's Craig Joyner or Anson Dorrance replacing him...

Hall of Famers go out on THEIR OWN TERMS! He didn't even get to dictate when his last game as a coach would be...

shameful.

Atta boy Coach Smith. Went with your boots on!
If fired, doesn't the board now have to give justification?
400-251??? Seems to me like someone's going to have to do a bit of explain'n.

Dickie, I am shocked Dick Smith = Hanna Soccer=Soccer in SC I am sad I have been saying this for a long time loyalty in today's world is a one way street.
Dickie has too much rspect for the City of Anderson and The Hanna program to be negative. But I will say it T.L. Hanna you @#%$ed up
Dickie this is going to lead to something better I know and believe...all old and young Coaches alike...take note is this the direction we are going???? I have seen it accross all sports in HS. What have you done for me lately? We must coach and play with the players we have,
Again Dickie, my heart and prayers are with you and your family.

Whats up with all the coaching changes this season? Boys and girls side..It seems the turnover this season has been higher than normal. Is not the coaching pool for soccer kind of limited? How many coaches get "let go" because they do not win enough? There seems to be more stability in coaching football than soccer and let's face it the emphasis is on football..

You deserve better than this.

Thanks for all you have done, and all you still do, Coach Smith.
