I see many posts by people worried about ODP and how valid it is, and will it put the best teams on the field. Is it about W's and L's or development?

Who are we kidding? Look at the teams who play challenge year over year and never win a game. Our system itself, the basis of who plays at what level is flawed. To me this is a much larger hole in SC soccer, than the ODP debate.

Tonight there is a match between a team who was 0-9-1 last year, and 0-2-0 this year - versus a real "challenge" team. How much do we really think the kids on the weak team will learn tonight?

Please understand my point is for debate purposes only. Hopefully, SCYSA will listen sooner or later. It is also not meant to poke fun at any kid, anywhere... In fact it is meant to protect them, in the long run.

The largest hole in SC Soccer -- indeed, American soccer -- is really much more fundamental than that. In short, we place far too much value on competing and winning; far too little on training and developing. Playing (and even winning) games doesn't make you better. TRAINING REGULARLY AND CORRECTLY, especially at a young age, makes you better.

1) The best coaches should be working with the younger age groups, developing and instilling positive skills and habits, not helping older (made) kids win games.
2) Those same younger kids should train more and play less. In the older age groups, kids are playing 50-60 competitive matches a year. Heck, most PROS need rest from THAT kind of scheduling.
3) Club-level recruiting should be strongly discouraged, and when rules are clearly broken, sanctions should ensue. Why? Because most parents don't understand that their children are being recruited PRECISELY BECAUSE their current club coach has done a great job training their kids. SCYSA should SUPPORT that concept.
4) Apply the following general rule of thumb: If your kid spends more time in a car or bus going to matches than he/she does to train, you're not developing a player. You're developing a commuter.

It's come down to if you have the money we will make room for you..All of our leagues..challenge,classic and rec have become watered down..Ten years ago my son played in a very competitive rec league..today how many teams play rec at the older age groups or three teams show up for a round robin weekend for a state championship..There are clubs that fielded challenge teams that they knew were going to have little to no success..Could of played classic and had an enjoyable season but choose a league that they had no business in..These are soccer professionals making these decisions..Should they not know better? I am all for promotion/deregulation system..Even more important..Build a strong rec league again..Why? Because everyone comes thru the rec league at some time..

A quick look at the schedule and it was not hard to figure out who you are referring to. They are 0-2 but they have lost both games by one goal. Per your logic all three teams I guess should not be in Challenge!?

I guess you would prefer it if this team went classic and beat everyone by 4 or 5 goals?? And of course those all-important bragging rights of winning the Presidents Medal Cup!!!

And besides why are you worried about other people's choices? Your daughter must have got cut from the team or something, because you obviously have a beef with them ...

There are simply not enough teams to warrant the layers required to provide the appropriate competition for all in SC.

Having said that I believe that promotion / relegation will one day be needed in SC soccer.

Of course everyone wants motherhood, apple pie etc... best coaches at younger ages, less matches, more concentration on practice versus games.

But in your smart a... response you poor mouthed the kids in the lower league who, may just be worried about training, and not worried about winning ABC, your own response disagreed with the point you were trying to make.

Other states, for some reason have the promotion system. I guess they are all dumb and we are so brillant for letting coaches "pick" where they play.

SCYSA can not force the heavens to open up and right all that is wrongs with soccer in the US. Keep quoting that thought process and see when it happens. They can however decide to do the right thing and better organize the competitive teams in SC. Simple...

5) In the current incestuous system, too many parents are afraid to ask questions, lest they be deemed troublemakers and their kids penalized in questionable selection processes. Recently, one veteran soccer parent (multiple kids) suggested that, while he agreed with what I said, I should be careful where I say it. While I can't disagree, I'd say that underlying fear is PRECISELY why we are where we are in South Carolina. A lot of informed, well-intentioned parents are afraid to tweek the powers that be (whose incomes and opportunities we supply through exorbitant fees).

6) The concept of EXPOSURE. Too many club coaches are selling it; too many college tuition-fearing parents are buying it. What SHOULD be sold is the quality of training and the club's overall vision.
7) Support for the American player. Next time a college/ODP coach waxes poetic on the subject of soccer in America, and why your child NEEDS to be in ODP, google his college team's website and check out the roster. If it's 50% foreign -- and THOSE are the guys getting the grants-in-aid -- you'll know whose future he REALLY cares about; i.e., his own. You might also count how many kids are from South Carolina, or even the Carolinas.

Agreed on promotion/relegation. The problem is that new teams, even if they are really good, would have to start low and work up and that's hard to do at U16-U18 when the teams are just formed. Maybe have a qualifying tournament the first of August to determine what level they would play at in the fall?

As for college soccer, parents should focus on the academics first as there is a greater chance at financial aid that way, then through soccer. But, I agree on the over value of ODP, Academy, etc. That's all $$$ driven for someone to make money ultimately. I recently heard that SC Academy was going to cost $4,000 for this year! That's absurd!
