So with round one of ODP tryouts out of the way, here's how I understand it, please correct me if I am wrong:

Today: round one of tryouts in the three Regions. Invitations to round two on the 19th will be out by the end of this week. (18 from each group in each region will be invited to the second round on the 19th in Columbia.

From the tryouts on the 19th, invitations will be issued to come to sub regionals.

From the sub regionals, Teams will be formed from each age group, and those who didn't make it can try again next year.

Net of it all, one Team in each age group.

This is fine, however, my first impression of this new way of doing things was there would be accelerated training for those who aren't ultimately chosen for the region team in their age group, thus allowing for continued learning and development.

Did I get it right?

I think you are right but im not sure about how many girls they give an invite to come back and how it is going to work. I know for the 96 girls 2 and maybe all 3 of the girls that played on the Region III team were not at tryouts. They will be at the make up tryouts which i guess is on the 19th

In theory, the extra, regionalized layer of tryouts SHOULD produce a more thorough evaluation process. I personally see it as more of a promotional gimmick, as in the "new and improved ODP." More kids try out. More fees.
My question is, what changes will we see on the back end, in terms of consistency of philosophy and effort across ALL age groups/genders?

And yes, who will be accountable when that consistency is NOT there?

I suppose the new format will increase player turn out and hopefully bring more diversity (minority / Hispanic type profiles) to the pool. And maybe identify a future superstar that the previous format would not have produced. there are plenty of high potential players that do not do odp. And not many diversity/minority players that come out and this is probably where some real talent maybe hidden.

I think the bus ride and staying with teammates was a great experience for the players.

Chronic lack of diversity is a tremendous problem in soccer across the U.S. It could be addressed in some measure by active, constructive outreach programs in minority communities, but many "soccer people" are resistant to the idea. The reality is, many minority South Carolinians simply can't afford a "pay-to-play" format and hundreds of dollars worth of overpriced club gear. As has been said here before: Address cost, address participation, address diversity.
The vonly reason I'm holding my breath is because it's such a worthy goal.

The great irony is that, U.S. soccer, at its roots, was an immigrant-inspired game, with ethnic-based clubs in cities across the country. One of our first great players was Billy Gonsalves, a Portuguese-American. Joe Gaetjens, a Haitian-American, scored the winner in the milestone victory over England. The list goes on and on.

No, but since there were only 16 players in my daughter's division location so I am wondering if they will all be invited.
