What if the teams that won last year have to play a man down?

You never answered my question, which was asked back on page 3......this is from the boys perspective.

"Lets take it another way GSD.....so, Clemson has USC. CESA has......

Who is your natural competitor? Who do you benchmark yourself to and compete against? Instate...out of state?"

When club/Academy/training is done properly, you don't need an external benchmark. Only parents -- paying through the nose and understandihng very little -- need a benchmark. Kids? Most just want to play/win, and assume that means they're getting better.

Hogwash. Show me any organization uninterested in benchmarking and I'll show you an organization in decline.

"When club/Academy/training is done properly...."

And how do you know if its being done properly?

You KNOW it's being done "properly" if you (as a presumed competent trainer who KNOWS what he's doing) can see individual improvement. In short, the people within your club who actually know something, can tell if players are developing without ever stepping beyond a training environment. Yes, game experience is important. Yes, tactical understanding and the excperience of competing are important. But winning and losing is NOT a benchmark for INDIVIDUAL PLAYER development. In fact, I'd say that playing a series of lopsided, non-competitive matches is actually a detriment -- fool's gold.

Now, I'll assume you've actually coached somewhere. If you did, and you've got a clue, you know when your kids are getting better, and when they're not WITHOUT EVER PLAYING a single game.

The point is, parents pay. Most parents have neither played nor coached soccer. Their metric is winning games, and a lousy metric it is. That "metric" encourages kids/parents to change clubs more often than socks, OFTEN to their kids' detriment. That kind of thinking results in kids training one or two nights a week "locally," often in a non-challenging coed environment, for the privilege of winning a state cup.

In short, I don't need a 4-0 win over East Argybargy, followed by an 8-0 win over the same team two weeks later, to feel I've somehow "improved." I can see it in training.

Our team has two very strong in-state rivals and the games with them are very competitive. The other team in premiere league is usually one of them for all teams. They won't all be from the same club for all of the other CESA teams. since we are in premiere league, we don't really get the chance to play many of the other in state teams in our age group. I know many of the CESA teams have very strong rivalries with other premiere league teams as well that the casual observer wouldn't be aware of.
There is no lack of competition for the players.

I have coached.....

This thread (and I started it!!) is NOT about player development, individual or otherwise.

It is about team/club performance.....specifically at State cup in the u15-18 age groups, where for two consecutive years one club has won everything.

The question is......is that good? Does it reflect a healthy state system? And what should the clubs not winning, do differently?

I agree that parents leaving team A to go to team B and then on to Team C strictly becasue of winning isn't the greatest strategy. But thats not what we're talking about. A trend has clearly developed in this state in winning Cups. Its NOT about parents......its about clubs. CESA is winning everything. What are they doing that other clubs aren't? If I were a parent at another club and had a competitive kid....I would be asking the club what we need to do to differently?

Those are the questions I'm posing to the forum to try and spark discussion. Better development?> What does that look like? Recruiting? How to hold onto your clubs own kids? Better competiton? What do we need to do?

On the boys end I understand the reasons (Academy) On the girls end.......not sure I understand why.

I believe the fact that CESA is run by a full time soccer staff is a huge factor in their success. The directors don't pay part time attention to their teams and the club, they do it all day everyday and are not limited by the time necessary to do their "real" job.
