Eastside will be missing one... their goalkeeper.

All members of the 3 CESA ECNL teams will not be traveling to San Antonio. For a given event a maximum of only 18 members of an ECNL team roster are included in the event roster. The CESA u-15 ECNL team includes 24 players, u-16 includes 22 and the u-17 includes 23. Of those players some are from out of state, so they could attend the ECNL event with no impact on Viking Cup. Others play for SC High School teams that aren't in Viking Cup, so they could also attend ECNL without impact on Viking Cup. The actual impact of the ECNL event on Viking Cup will depend on how the CESA ECNL coaches (or coach) determine which players will be included in the ECNL event rosters.

I'm sure some kids can opt out. Not just because of the cup but because of time and money. Several years to go. As far as talent in the state it seemed every team we played from Florida, Calif etc. were just bigger. Plus being short-handed didn't help. If I were a coach recruiting at an ECNL event I would'nt know where to start. Over 1000 kids in one place. Seems overwhelming. I started too late in the process but my daughter is at PC today for her official visit and if she wants to play its there or nowhere. C of C never looked. I don't think she has the size they were looking for. She is looking forward to her last season in high school soccer.

Ha. Actually Seattle was probably my daughter's favorite ECNL event - the weather was fantastic and they had a great time. She was about ready to move out there until she was convinced that the weather she experienced was not typical. On the other hand, the Texas ECNL event (cold and snowy) made her decision about not wanting to play college soccer in the snow! Until that event, she was still considering some NE schools. We were lucky in that we only had one year of heavy travel. I do feel for the families/players doing it for 3 or 4 years. I would hope the players could chose which venue - Viking Cup or ECNL event worked the best or provided the most enjoyment for them. Like Delta Dog said, there should be enough players on the ECNL roster that all players do not have to attend all events.

My question is what do the HS coaches feel about their better players missing the premier girls tourney -- which is attended by college coaches -- to go play in a club event that could have been played anytime the last nine months? Seems like a total lack of respect by CESA to force these girls to play.

Lack of concern by ECNL. High School will become a thing of the past in soccer. Left for only the casual player.

Maybe more a lack of concern by ECNL in SC than ECNL in general. There used to be additional pages at the ECNL website, one of which explained ECNL's support for participation in High School to the extent of scheduling the ECNL events to avoid conflict with the FALL high school leagues. I imagine most of the original club members of the Red Bull League (origin of ECNL) played high school in the Fall. So, it's not every club that has a conflict between HS and ECNL, and where there is a conflict it may have more to do with the individual club's lack of concern for HS soccer than the ECNL organization as a whole.

Surely, 18-36 players per season that opt to play ECNL rather than HS will not dilute HS soccer that much to leave the game only to the casual player.

I guess that poster considers members of all non-ECNL teams to be "casual players".
