Our family has some experience in this. We played with the same club, in the same leagues, and did the same amount of travel. I would say it cost a minimum of $5,000 a year everything included. OUCH!

so maybe the question that should be asked is "how much did it cost to Blakely to play at the highest level available, against the best teams she could possibly find, every chance she got?

So I guess the Question Should be how much money has These women players made playing professional soccer. And the key word is Playing? Not talking about coaching. Pretty much after college it is done for 99.999% of women soccer players. So you better enjoy the quick 4 years. Unless they want to coach, and that field seems to be pretty even across the board with all levels of college experiences & gender.

Yes, youth soccer fees are high. But, doesn't the scholarship each year, for 4 years, that a lot of kids get, or could get if they swallowed their pride and looked at the appropriate school/level, offset that?

Paying 5K a year for ECNL for U15-U18 is 20K. Most kids on a ECNL team can find way more then 20K of scholarship over four years. As far as Mattern, I think it's safe to say she paid nothing for 3-4 years at South Carolina. Not a bad return.

Maybe opinions on the cost of youth soccer should be held until after a kid 1) decides not to play college soccer or 2) graduates from college after a four-year career. One does correlate to the other.

Obviously you have not had a son or daughter being recruited. Girls soccer very rarely gets much more than 1/2 athletic scholarship. In a players case from SC going to a SC school, if they had good grades they would first get the lottery money which is $5000.00/yr, which would pay for over half of tuition. With other scholarships in state players very rarely need much over $4000-$6000 a year of athletic to get all their education paid for. The universities call this stacking. This is a testimemt to the type of grades most women athletes get. Now football is a whole other monster I am talking womens soccer.

only 11-12 full "athletic" scholarships available for womens D1 soccer. Most D1 teams carry 25-30 players on their rosters. So several players being left out, or getting partial scholarships. I was told by a club coach that if a parent is telling you their kid is getting a full ride in D1 womens soccer their a liar.

Exactly, thanks. If 4-6K of soccer is the minimum then, like I said, that will add up to enough to make up for the 20K you paid. And, don't be naive. Coaches stack money to make the package bigger and more attractive to a player. Alot of schools have pre-determined amounts for certain academic standards. So, again soccer does help if you select schools properly.

So dad, what you are telling me is I should plot my future (career) based on what school gives me the most money and where I can play soccer?

Yes, yes, I know ...

Come on Funny Guy. Not at all.

But if ECNL kids, that want to continue soccer in college, look at level-appropriate schools, they are most likely going to narrow down to 3-5 choices that have a nice combination of athletic and academic money. And money, that over four years, will offset or exceed the 20K spent on U15-U18 ECNL years.

Remember, a lot of coaches/Athletic Depts have earmarked, non-athletic money to package with athletic money. If a coach only gives 5K of athletic along with 5K of non-athletic, that's still 40K over a career.

Not a bad return for that expensive ECNL. Better then paying full price?

Anyone who pays $5K/year in club fees on the PRESUMPTION that they'll get it back by reducing tuition/fees is a fool. There are FAR too many variables.

Assume the $$$ is gone, then gratefully accept ANY college aid.

I guess my only presumption is players are seriously into soccer, applies themself for the 5K they are paying U15-U18 and works at finding a college. Anyone that cheats in those areas and aren't held accountable by their parents to do so then, yes, I guess the return might not come.

Kids on ECNL level teams, that LOOK AT LEVEL-APPROPRIATE SCHOOLS, can find these positive, financial situations.

Other options to save money? Don't make every ECNL trip a family vacation with everyone going. Or, don't play ECNL.
