You've got to have a good ratio of the fun to the work...the second you lose the fun, you find the burnout.

I know a few players that have burned out while playing soccer and have gotten tired of the game. The overall opinion that each of them had, was that it wasn't fun anymore. They saw it as work. Every aspect of the game just seemed like more & more work. I have been a player and am now a coach and one thing that has kept me going is remembering to have fun. When you look at soccer you have to realize, it's just a game. Yes, scoring goals, blocking shots, and winning are amazing!!! But at young ages kids have to have fun & learn to love the game. After that they can then become competitive and begin to work at goals they set. If you take the fun out of it, you take away the passion and enjoyment that comes with all the experiences.

I also know of several very good HS players that went on to college only to find that the HS they attended placed more emphasis on soccer than their chosen college and they then transferred out to Carolina or Clemson. Lots of times, players realize they only have 2-4 more years of playing that counts left and opt to "retire" early from the game and pursue more life-meaning opportunities. It's just part of the landscape. Particularly in non-D1 settings.
