I was listening to Mike and Mike the other morning and they were talking about different rule changes they would like to see in the different sports.
I was interested to hear what people thought about rule changes in our sport.
One that I thought of was, what if the person that got fouled was the one that had to take the penalty kick? Like in basketball and free throws.
Any ideas or other rule suggestions?

That idea would be ok if there was no keeper and each team took 20 pks a game...

Who takes it for a handball in the box? The defender?

The idea behind a penalty kick is to actually score in a sport where 0-0 is not uncommon...

Anyway, in hs I'd love to see the substitutions on yellow cards changed to optional. There are times when you need to take the player off and times (keeper) when they need to stay on.

RE-DEFINE OFFSIDE
In basketball, there's nothing prettier than a backdoor cut that ends in a layup. But when the same thing happens in soccer -- like Clint Dempsey's controversial disallowed goal against Algeria in the World Cup -- it's offsides. So here's the switch: Once a team gains possession inside the 18-yard box, there is no offsides. Playmakers like Lionel Messi would become that much more dangerous, and defenders would be forced to, you know, defend, rather than hold their line and pray that an assistant ref's flag saves them.

I totally agree with changing offsides. I believe the entire reason offsides was created in the first place was because of offensive players sitting on one end of the field, waiting for a teammate to dump them the ball. Which was fine in those cases, but that hurt other players (like you mention) at the same time. I've got a buddy who suggested that same thing to me a few months ago. Excellent idea.

Rule change for high school soccer:

Maximum 3 subs per game, no re-entry. Just like the big boys. Bring fitness into the equation.

You don't hear any wrestling parents crying that their kid doesn't get enough playing time!

Kids play sports because they find it fun. Eliminate the fun and soon you eliminate the kid.

That's because they ALL play and get a little debbie snack cake at the end of practice.

No, 3 subs for high school isn't a good idea.

I say change to college substitution rules. Unlimited # of subs but no re-entry in first half after being subbed out and only one re-entry per game.

Something needs to be done on the sub rule. I see too many games where coaches use it to shorten a game. 5-6 subs a half is too much. Also i would love to see the offsides rule change once inside the 20

How about limit the number of subs during the last 5 minutes of the match? That way, a coach can't constantly waste time by subbing someone on the far side of the field when they are up by 1 goal.

The problem I see with the sub rule is who is going to keep track of that? Each school have to hire/pay for a score keeper?
I think every coach would tell you that they have been up a goal and every chance they got would sub the outside mid that is on the opposite side of the field.
I like the idea of changing the offsides rule but within reason. You don't want a player to just be able to stand by the goal keeper the entire game. Making it a line, like hockey would make the game interesting to see what it did to the spacing on the rest of the field.
