The problem I see with the sub rule is who is going to keep track of that? Each school have to hire/pay for a score keeper? I think every coach would tell you that they have been up a goal and every chance they got would sub the outside mid that is on the opposite side of the field. I like the idea of changing the offsides rule but within reason. You don't want a player to just be able to stand by the goal keeper the entire game. Making it a line, like hockey would make the game interesting to see what it did to the spacing on the rest of the field.
Yeah...but you would still see one lone mark on that forward near the box. In hockey, you can't get the separation that you can in soccer with the speed and size of the playing area. There could be gaping holes and so much for keeping a defense compact on the attack.

No, 3 subs for high school isn't a good idea.
I say change to college substitution rules. Unlimited # of subs but no re-entry in first half after being subbed out and only one re-entry per game.
Something needs to be done on the sub rule. I see too many games where coaches use it to shorten a game. 5-6 subs a half is too much. Also i would love to see the offsides rule change once inside the 20
How about limit the number of subs during the last 5 minutes of the match? That way, a coach can't constantly waste time by subbing someone on the far side of the field when they are up by 1 goal.
At the high school level, time management is part of the game; so is developing a bench so that you can sub without creating holes on the field. I do agree that the "burn the clock by subbing" tactic in the last minutes of the game is frustrating. I have seen officials tell a coach "no more subs unless there is a card or an injury" in the last 2-3 minutes.
Upside of limiting subs in the last 5 minutes would be it forces teams to play the game on the field down to the end; downside would be that if you have a couple of bench players you want to get in, often the last minutes are their only shot at playing time. I think a limit would be reasonable, though.
I'm definitely against overall limiting subs and no re-entry at the high school level. For most of us, high school ball is still developmental; I think players should be allowed PT whenever possible as the game dictates. Also, in the case of a lopsided game, would you really want a team to be forced to leave 8 of its 11 starters in for the entire game while others with dire need of playing experience sit and watch, or would it make more sense to be able to clear the bench and let as many as possible play?

I more interested in the the amount of times they sub then how many they sub.In lopsided games just send in the bench all at once. Do you really need to sub more than 3 times a half?.

There are also times when you want to just give a bench player a chance to see what he/she can do...it's a lot more likely to happen if the coach knows he can get the player back out and the starter back in if it just isn't working. I think a lot of developing players would spend a lot more time on the bench and less on the field if putting a player out there or pulling a starter off had to be a long-term commitment.
At the high school level, I'm pretty much against limiting by rule a player's opportunities to get into the game.

I love the way colleges start and stop clock. No guessing. Maybe we are just looking at the last five minutes of a game that needs to be addressed. We had a injury in a game with 4 min to go and down by one. Clock ticked over a minute to get her off and no time was added. Stop clock on subs and injuries and we good.

Injury time should have been added...otherwise it would be way too easy for a team up by a goal to "suffer an injury" and run out the clock! I agree that subbing just to eat clock in the last five minutes may need to be addressed. As it is now, it's often part of game strategy for the leading team. I'd rather see games won on the field with the ball in play. Gotta admit, when we went up by a goal with about 4 left last night, I was tempted, but resisted!

I am old school and grew up in the NASL years. Back, when we played in high school, when the game was tied and gone thru OT and Sudden Death you went to the Shoot-out, at the desgnated spot 35 yards out from goal a player starts and moves toward goal to score on opposing keeper, they have 5 seconds to score. Very similar to hockey. This would give you a more exciting and fulfilling ending then pk's. Just a thought.

Achmed think "if you don't want subbing, keep the ball on the field"
