Being this years President, this is my letter that is the opening of the scaca.org web page.
It's an honor being a Soccer Coach for 23 years (20 boys and 3 jv girls) to have this honor

Dear Fellow Coaches:
I am both honored and humbled to serve my fellow coaches as the 65th president of the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association. Since its inception in 1946, the SCACA has grown from an initial membership of only 50 coaches to a current membership of well over 5200, making it one of the largest in the nation. I believe this speaks to the solid principles upon which the SCACA was founded and have continued to uphold. The SCACA is a strong organization because of the quality of the coaches in its membership. The SCACA has a rich history of honoring athletes and currently sponsors All Star events for 13 different sports. But, true to its name, the SCACA has been committed to recognizing the outstanding achievement of individual coaches and inducted its 19th class into the Hall of Fame in July, 2011. These events, recognition and awards are not possible, if not for the active involvement of the SCACA members or the major contributions of the Auxiliary Groups supporting SC athletes and coaches. The generosity of the Auxiliary Groups and active involvement of members have made the SCACA one of the strongest athletic coaches associations in the nation.

I have been coaching high school athletes for over 28 years and believe I have remained in this profession, not for the win but for each individual athlete I coach. The win/loss record of a season will be forgotten, but the principals and values we instill in the kids we coach can stay with them for a lifetime. We are coaching our student athletes even through our actions, so we need to be ever mindful we are their role models. The SCACA supports these efforts through clinics which stress not only proper techniques and rules, but also good sportsmanship and the development of the whole person.

In keeping with my motivation as a coach, it is my goal, as president of the SCACA, to serve in a manner which honors the positive reputation of the SCACA. The SCACA is an organization in existence to support its members, the coaches of this fine state, and stays strong because of the quality of its membership. As your president, I challenge each of you to become more involved in the SCACA and to encourage other coaches to join us. We, the coaches of South Carolina ARE the SCACA. As your president, I welcome your questions, concerns and suggestions. If I can be of assistance to you, please do not hesitate to contact me. Again, I am honored by the opportunity to serve as your president.

Sincerely,
Scott D. Ruggles
SCACA President

From Shell Dula, SCACA Executive Director

We appreciate some of the quick responses to the 2011 All-Sports Clinic Survey. This is the only avenue for us to make improvements and serve you, our state coaches, in a professional manner. It is apparent that we need to respond to a significant number of you who are suggesting the Clinics location being more centrally located in the state, preferably Columbia.

In the spring, 2010, we solicited bids for the 2012-13 Clinics. Columbia Convention and Business/Visitors Bureau were most gracious in working with us, hosting us, and submitting bids. We appreciated their courtesy, hospitality, and professionalism. However, the bid was not accepted by the Board of Directors, Dec., 2010.

1. The Convention Center does not have enough rooms for the daily sessions. To accommodate the number of sessions, meeting rooms in nearby hotels will have to be utilized.
2. The accessibility of the vendors/exhibitors is hindered by being housed on the bottom floor (via escalator), away from the flow of clinic traffic.
3. The Convention Center has only 275 complimentary parking spaces. Nearby parking garages are owned by the city, incurring a cost for the attendee. The adjacent parking area of the Colonial Center is available only if summer school is not in session and/or no events are scheduled.
4. The bid for Exhibit Hall, Meeting Space, Food/Beverage was the most costly.

The area in which the Convention Center is located is a beautiful, bustling area, offering diverse eating/entertainment establishments, a variety of hotels, etc. However, with our significant growth in membership (5300) and clinic attendees, the SCACA Board of Directors has to look at all of the Xs and Os.

We do look forward to working with the Columbia area again as new venues are planned.
