In order to provide a more robust evaluation system through the referee associations, additional funding would have to be raised. The assessers are paid to go evaluate referees. Where will this additional funding come from? High Schools are reluctant to pay for 3 referees and I'm sure they wont want to pay for an assessor.
Some have suggested to have the coaches do the assessment of their games. I don't believe a coach who just won, or lost a game is going to be the best assessor. The referee is there to ensure the game is played safely, fairly, within the rules and with integrity. The coach of the same game has different objectives. I suggest a coach from a different school, other then from the two teams playing be the assessor. I'm sure a system could be worked out to make this happen.
This could suppliment the current referee assessors.

1) Begin with mandatory fitness standards, assessed on an annual basis in DECEMBER. Any official who fails to meet the standard has until Feb. 1 to get fit or step down. Veteran officials who can not meet the standards should be offered the opportunity to evaluate 1 game a week for pay.
2) Officials should be given an avenue to police themselves. By this, I mean that, at season's end, officials should be required to identify the "problems" among themselves by a mutually agreeable (confidential) means, then work to correct or remove those problems.
3) Before each season,coaches should be allowed to submit a confidential blackball (or 2) to assigners, eliminating those officials from their games. (This may already be done in soccer. I know it's done in basketball.)
4) Cross-pollinate the officials'/coaches' lists. Each year, identify the top 2-3 problems and directly address their need to accept mandatory remediation or removal.
5) Actively recruit officials by means listed above.

No freaking way!

Who do you anticipate them meeting with in this review? Themselves? If so, that's part of the problem. They always defend one another and act as if "yeah, he got the right call." My @$$! Will coaches have input, the SCHSL?

We didn’t underestimate them. They were a lot better than we thought.

Find them where? Hit 'em up on Facebook or Twitter? Love to see former players doing SCHSL and USYSA matches.
Tell me.....how do we identify/recruit them?

There are many young kids 11-17 who are refereeing. Unfortunately, it is a very small portion of those kids who will ever stay with refereeing long enough to referee a high school game. It is way too often a young referee is berated by coaches who think they are playing for the World Cup title at U6 or U8. If I'm that referee why would I want to Continue.
These young referees take a course, buy the uniform and receive very little additional training. I suggest clubs in the state take the initiative to have a referee development program along with player development.

My boy lasted a year and my girl did two years..Same reason..They enjoyed the games but could not handle the abuse..14 and 15 year olds do not know how to shrug that off well..I do not recall any instruction on how to deal with coaches and parents other than cards..Learning to deal with this should be part of the instruction..

We have recruited good, young referees from Winthrop University. Two or three guys who played club and high school soccer and really know the game. Two young ladies on the current Winthrop team that are doing a great job.
This is good money for a college student. Wish we could get more college students involved from the colleges and universities around the state.

Hurst check with my girl in the fall..She will be looking for some cash and or games...Had our first two man game this week...Just awful!!! Games should not even take place with only two refs..

Will do cht, the USSF course will be offered at the end of August in Rock Hill. The high school test will be given in January. Have her contact me when she gets on campus. I have Lancaster-Rock Hill girls tonight, which should be a "spirited match". We are short refs up here and it was originally scheduled for two. I begged the assignor to get me a third and, to his credit, he did. Communication is the key!
