The annual North-South Soccer Classic, sponsored by South Carolina United FC and hosted by the South Carolina High School Soccer Coaches Association will be held Saturday, June 11 at the College of Charleston soccer stadium at Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant. The girls game will start at 12 noon and the boys match will kickoff at 2 p.m. Admission is $6.
The boys event was started in 1989 and has been played all 23 years since while the girls match was first staged in 1997 and, likewise, has been held the last 15 summers with the boys game. In the boys series, the North leads 14-6-2, but the South squad registered a 2-0 victory last year. In the girls series, the North holds a slim 7-6-1 advantage and claimed a 3-1 win last June at Wofford College's Snyder Field. These matches feature some of the Palmetto State's top graduated senior soccer players.
On Friday, June 10, Coach Kevin Heise of Brookland-Cayce and Coach Wayne Quinlan of Hilton Head Island will be the 10th and 11th inductees into the South Carolina High School Soccer Coaches Hall of Fame. Previous inductees include: (2007) William Hosea, Tom Reilly, Frank Ridlehoover, Phil Savitz, and Dick Smith; (2009) Andy Demori and Ted Miller; and (2010) Troy Bennage and Anthony Pelton.
The SCHSSCA's other all-star event, the Clash of the Carolinas, will be staged on Saturday, July 9 at Daniel Island's Blackbaud Stadium, home of the Charleston Battery. This will be the fifth consecutive year for the "Clash" with all meetings being held at Blackbaud Stadium.
