Spot on! I was a player, parent, coach (HS, college & club) and club president before I became a referee. I really enjoy officiating matches and wish I would have become a referee sooner. We need more people with high-level soccer experience to cross over to the "dark side".  Have to continue to do our best to make the game good (and safe) for the kids. 
Kids play sports because they find it fun. Eliminate the fun and soon you eliminate the kid.
