I was sitting around with nothing to do this weekend when I thought..."gee, I wonder what the SC Girl's rankings would be using the RPI (Rating Percentage Index)."

As most of you know, this is used extensively in men's college basketball; but, it has recently started to be used more significantly in women's college soccer as well. So I researched the calculation for women's soccer and set out to apply it to SC. Not as easy I had hoped. However -- at the end of two days, inputting almost 800 games, and constantly tweaking formulas -- I believe the data is materially accurate and calculating correctly. Please keep in mind that this is an unadjusted calculation whereas the NCAA adds points for good wins and subtracts points for bad losses which I did not even attempt to do.

All game data was downloaded from the Eurosport Scoreboard. For purposes of this exercise, only games that included a SC high school versus a SC high school were included. The logistics of adding all out-of-state games for Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and even Wisconsin (??) were far too overwhelming and labor intensive. Additionally, all scrimmages and JV games were excluded as well. Lastly, the final RPI ranking table only contains teams playing a minimum of 8 games through 04/11/15.

The top ten in SC Girl's Soccer as of 04/12/2015 per RPI:

1 Lexington High School
2 Dutch Fork High School
3 Academic Magnet School
4 Wando High School
5 Cardinal Newman High School
6 J.L. Mann High School
7 Chapin High School
8 Dorman High School
9 Fort Dorchester High School
10 Mauldin High School

SCHS Girl's Soccer RPI Ranking 04/12/2015

Pretty interesting stuff.

I welcome any comments, finding of errors, suggestions, and so on to try and make this better.

I will also try and update and publish every Sunday until the season end in a few weeks.

Thanks.
