Just a quick question and/or observation, why do all the volunteers seem to be from the boys programs? Are there no girls coaches that care enough to participate and help out? I know there were one or two, but more need to show initiative and do their part to make the GIRLS and boys state championship weekend a success.

That being said....Congrats to all teams, volunteers and staff(but NOT the ball), for making it a great weekend. The venue was top notch, thanks to USC and coach Berson(who was visible for most of the weekend) for helping to make the high school soccer championships feel at home!

Hard to drive two hours to volunteer when you can't get a day off from school on a Friday. Some principals feel that it just isn't a big enough priority. That is my personal experience, I cannot speak for others. As well, hard to volunteer on Saturday when you have to help with physicals at 8:30 in the morning.

I hate asking this, but is there anyone that can "pm" me what situation made this thread come about? I don't want to know publicly if you can help it.

Come on now R1C, poor excuses. Donn't you think that every one else had to take the day off? If you were in the finals(not meaning that in a derogatory way), you would take the time off and be there. Just to volunteer for one or two games, doesn't have to be all day or even both days, is helpfull. If you enjoy soccer so much you would be there, whether you were playing or not. I had my own obligations on Sat from 8-12, drove 1 1/2 hours, and was able to be there the rest of the day. My point is, it's the same volunteers for these events year in and year out. If it were not for Quinlan, Hosea, Smith, Ruggles, the Heises, and the small band of other volunteers these events would never happen. My point is, sacrifice, be involved, support more than just "your" team, and help take some of the load from these guy's.

AK, when you receive your degree in administration and move to Anderson to take over the principalship of my school--all my problems will be solved. Until then, When "The Man" says "no" I stay put until the bell rings.

When you subsequently take a concurrent role as my Athletic Director and grant me absence from a job requirement--all my problems plus one will be solved.

I really enjoyed your post, though. No, seriously, it was great.

I was not attacking and I will probably not be your AD or administator any time soon, but if I was....I do understand some can't, but just seems to me, more than some don't care to get involved or would rather be doing something else. I just feel it is a responsibility of the soccer "community", not just the guys coaches but the girls as well. Myself, I enjoy being there all weekend, it's not so much volunteering, "work", as it is just good soccer.

Overall, I was pleased with the level of refereeing in our game.

Also, the refs in our lower state finals were very good and probably the best crew overall we've had the entire year. I will get back on later and post specific names because they did a good job and deserve to be recognized. In addition to this crew, Howard Ash always refs a strong game and so does Hal Cauthen. If you want refs who keep up with the play and know the game, hire these two. I have seen the referee who does not seem interested in being there and does not want to keep up with the play and seems to have no ambition to control the game. However, whenever a coach brings this to the attention of someone in charge, the coach is being "petty" and "looking for someone to blame". How do you filter out the worst of the worst when you cannot criticize anything a referee does?

I think the over-the-back versus undercut rule and the old hand-to-ball or ball-to-hand rules still give people fits because referees call it different ways. Also, there were several instances on Saturday where one of our players was taken down and the ref put the whistle in his mouth but did not blow it and did not say "play on" as to give advantage. It looked as though the referee was arguing with himself as to whether it was a foul or not. Referees- do not second guess yourself. Remember what your teachers told you before you took a test-- your first instinct is usually right.

I am slowly getting more and more involved in high school soccer and look forward to volunteering a fraction of what some of our senior coaches do. We have a wonderful example in Dick Smith and slowly I yearn to be like him. Maybe one day...

I do have to agree with the R1C...

In Charleston County, we get 3 personal days a year. I have used all of mine. Therefore, if our girls had made it to the title game, I would have had to fudge a sick day in order to be at the game. Then what if my principal grants me the sick day but then wants a doctor's note to verify things? If you're honest, they may say no right from the beginning especially since Friday was a PACT testing day. I know if you teach in a school similar to mine (below average, high poverty, limited subs) there is probably no way you can get a day off to go and volunteer especially during PACT.

I'm not sure how to remedy that problem except to go to a Sat/Sun format or consecutive Saturdays but both of those open up another whole can of worms.
