There was some discussion yesterday at the North-South Soccer Classic and All-State meetings in regards to who is a member of the S.C. High School Soccer Coaches Association (SCHSSCA) and the S.C. Athletic Coaches Association (SCACA).

Again, this is the same problem that we run into each year with high school soccer and the all too familiar excuses or questions. "How do I become a member?" or my favorite, "I thought my AD did this for me? [Eek!]

In short, this is the responsibility of the high school soccer coach to cover their bases and be proactive rather than reactive. Each year, SCACA membership starts in early April and is generally done by the annual Summer Clinic (in Greenville this year). As a high school coach you should make arrangements NOW to attend the Summer Clinic if for no other reason than to acknowledge our announced Coach of the Year, the North-South Soccer Classic Coaches, and get information for the new school year/season.

Please check to see if you are indeed registered and if not take steps to become a member. This is ultimately YOUR responsibility and not that of the AD or anyone else. If you need a membership form, please visit the SCACA site and fill one out.

The members are listed below and this list has been on the SCHSSCA Private Forum (which some coaches simply won't use for whatever reason) since December.

184 soccer coaches are members of the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association.

Kevin, if coaches are not members, can their players still be selected for awards?

yes, but their coaches are not eligible to serve on selection committees, coach in all-star games, etc. ... they may nominate, but not enjoy any of the perks of association membership

Robert -

The SCHSSCA is an auxiliary organization of SCACA. There are separate fees for both -- SCACA ($40 prior to July of each year and $50 thereafter) and SCHSCCA ($5). You must be a member of SCACA before joining the SCHSSCA.

SCSOCCER.COM is the SCHSSCA's website and the fees for membership depend on the status of what you are signing up for:

2005 Subscription Fees
--------------------------------------
Boys Program - $50 (saves $10)
Boys Varsity - $35
Boys JV - $25
--------------------------------------
Girls Program - $50
(saves $10)
Girls Varsity - $35
Girls JV - $25
--------------------------------------
Individual - $15
(for players, fans, referees, parents, etc.)

It is really a shame that all HS soccer coaches do not join and participate actively in the association. If they have taken on the responsibility to coach a team, then the least they can do is to become a member. I am sure it is a good support group for all coaches and you may also obtain many intangible benefits, in addition to those already stated. Some schools have ADs who care nothing for soccer.
Coaches, if you are gonna be involved in HS soccer you should do everything you can to interact with your fellow coaches. This will also show your players that you care about their success on the field.

Why isn't the RNE boys coach a member? How about the coaches at Airport, AC Flora, or Lexington? I wonder if these schools have their baseball, basketball, and football coaches as members of their organizations and SCACA? Seems that soccer is getting disrespected at several Midlands schools. Why is this?
