page A25 of the 2004-2005 SCHSL Constitution, under "SEVENTH, EIGHTH AND NINTH GRADE ACTIVITIES RULES AND REGULATIONS"; section B.1.: "Students below the seventh grade may not participate in interscholastic athletics. Students in grades 7 and 8 will not be permitted to participate on varsity interscholastic teams in football, wrestling, and soccer."
I believe the League can waive almost any rule if it wants to.

Bear and JacketsSoccer are both correct. SCISA allows 7th and 8th graders to play varsity soccer. SCHSL does not allow this -- they used to but the rule took effect in 1996, so the last time any middle schoolers could play varsity soccer was in 1995 (meaning that 1999 was the last year of five-year lettermen in SCHSL soccer).

Then the next obvious question is, who is violating the rule? I have read threads that schools, that are not SCISA, are using 7th and 8th graders, or am I wrong?

Since 1 school, east Clarendon has already been mentioned,I believe they are playing as a "JV" team.I 'm not sure about that, but that was my understanding at a pre season scrimmage. Question is then , can a JV team play varsity teams? If EC has no player older than JV age , are they within the rules if they play some varsity teams?

Even though they may play in seventh or eighth grade, isnt there a rule that says you are not allowed to play a varsity sport for more than four years.

East Clarendon is a varsity team in a 1A region. They are not labeled as a "JV team". They are one of the 8, 1A lowerstate teams.

The whole Varsity playing JV isn't recommended and will hurt your ranking come playoff time. I think there was a problem with this last year with Blackville-Hilda playing a JV (or labeled as)team and they changed how they look at it come playoff time.
This ofcourse, is really only a concern in 1A and maybe a select few 2A schools.
But as I was scrolling through some 1A schools, Fox Creek being a new school this year is/has played several JV schools this season that are being counted on their record.

quote: Originally posted by BDad11: This brings to mind the incredible story I read several years ago about former Kentucky All American football player Dennis Johnson who played varsity football in the 2nd grade. I promise that is what the article in USA Today said. He played for a small HS in KY with his father as coach. He was like 5-8 170 lbs in 2nd grade. And of course his mother was dead set against it. The state of KY Athletic Assoc. heard about it and changed the rule to make the 7th grade the earliest a kid could play football. By the way it didn't seem to harm Dennis as he grew to 6-7 280 and was USA Today HS Defensive player of the year, All American at Ky and 1st rounder in the NFL. After reading about the Arena player being killed on the field, its a scary thought to think of a 2nd grader out there among jrs and srs.
I think that it meant he was in the 2nd grade but was actually 15.

My dad grew up in Kentucky and he said back in the 40's- 50's that if you were big enough to play, it didn't matter what age you were. He went to a school that housed K thru 12th grade. They had many state championship teams during that time. I recall him talking about 6th and 7th graders playing, if their parents allowed them to.
