At the Bluffton-Wade Hampton match a Wade Hampton player got a second yellow card. As the coach was about to put a player in, a linesman said that it was a new rule that there can be no subs for a player ejected with a double yellow and have to play a man down.

Did I miss something at two rules meetings? The Wade Hampton coach nor myself remembered hearing anything about this new rule.

He is wrong! You need to report this John, The ref got it wrong. This is called a Technical red and you are allowed to sub.

Just talked to Roger Hazel . You can sub on a double yellow. The refs blew the call.

There are several rule differences in high school and club. This is one of them - can't sub on double yellow in club because 2 equals red. Anyone else think of other differences?

2004, there are way too many differences to even start posting them. I have going back and forth between club games and high school games. Every now and then I scrw a call up and get corrected...and think DUH. Oh well....HS needs to get on board with FIFA rules.

2004, here is an example....Per FIFA rules, if you are in a wall and move your hand to protect your face or other sensitive areas, it is not a hand ball if the ball strikes your hand while protecting yourself. But in HS rules, it is a hand ball because you are not permitted to move your hand into the path of the ball under any circumstances, even for protection. Tell me that isn't messed up......

Were the coaches able to convince the Ref that he was mistaken? Some Refs know the rules better than anyone else and you can't convince them otherwise. Already this year we've had to discuss the throw-in that never came in bounds rule differences in two games. That discussion is of little consequence compared to playing a man down. At our annual pre-season rule meeting a few years back a coach asked what a team could do when a Ref was "Out-to-lunch" for whatever reason. The response from the league was basically the Ref is always right - no protests, etc. allowed. Everyone realizes that refs are inherently trying to do the right thing - but sometimes they don't/can't for various reasons (the most obvious being they don't know any better).

Coach, I agree with you. The season is just beginning but, I have observed many inconsistecnies between refs on the field. They can card a coach but, we have no recourse unless we have "vido evidence". It has been beat to death but there is a need for an objective evaluation system for officating staff. I also believe we need to pay refs better to encourage the professionals.

Two interesting rules that I have seen discrepancies in....

#1. Hand ball. It is the age old question of whether it was ball to hand (inadvertant) or hand to ball (intentional). Also, if an unintentional hand ball leads to an advantage for either team.... Different high school refs call this foul very differently.

#2. Throw ins. In high school, it is my understanding that ANY foul throw results in a change of possession. This includes things such as not bringing the ball back far enough, spinning the ball, taking the throw from the wrong spot, picking your foot up, etc. The main one is that throws that never come in bounds are now a change of possession. However, in some scrimmages, I have seen this rule incorrectly applied.

It would be a handball to 'move your hand into the path of the ball' (not only a handball but if the foul happened in an attempt to stop the ball from going into the goal, it would be a red card for the player) but to have your hands still against your chest (i.e. girls crossing their arms over their chest as they made wall) it would be legal if the ball hit your forearms, since it was protection. We've always been taught that you have to keep your arms against your body, if they moved then the Ref could/would call it a handball but otherwise, you were safe to protect yourself.
