Coaches – with Spring Break upon us we have a chance to reflect upon the season so far. One thing that seems really interesting to me is all the matches that have been draws that have ultimately been decided by penalty kicks. I’d be curious to get your thoughts, coaches, on your positions (positives and negatives) of using PKs as match deciders. Could or should we as a coaching organization push to use a points system for region play along international guidelines (3 pts. for a win, 1 for a draw, 0 for a loss)? I’m sure most of our teams have been on the winning and losing sides of PKs over the years. Obviously we would probably still need PKs for playoffs. What are your thoughts?

I do not like PK'S at all! The rest of the world uses ties why not us... The problem is geting the HSL and the NFHS to agree. I am in favor of ties and using points. We use it in tourmnament play all over the state. Can we get AD's to vote on this for soccer? Lets see what everyone else thinks.

I totally agree Coach J. Only in the playoffs should we resort to pk's after overtime. It's such a let down for a team to lose on pk's after playing so well in regulation and overtime. The game should not be decided by a goal keeper guessing correctly. It should be decided on the field.

I love PKs personally--I think they are an exciting part of soccer. The tension that creates the excitement is the same tension that results in one team going home disappointed and another elated. The same is true in a close win or loss. Ties are a middle feeling without excitement in my opinion.

Personally, i would not mind using ties in the regular season. However, if you are going to use ties, you must play more than 2- 5 minute overtime periods. As a coach, I'm not a huge fan of PKs... as a player (and i was a GKer) i loved them!!!

I would say that if you are going to use ties, go to a format that uses 2-10 minute overtime periods and is NOT golden goal. In the playoffs, i think there needs to be a non-golden goal segment and a golden goal segment before advancing to PKs.

Ties in the regular season would be great. Two 10 minute overtimes without golden goal followed by PK's in the playoffs would be great. Also, no substitutions on corner kicks or double yellow cards. Just some ideas on improvements to the HS game.

The region 8 standings (as has been discussed)is very tight this year and there's a high likelyhood that two or more teams may end up with similar records within the region. As well, more than a couple of games have been decided in pks. I think that using a points system (3pts win and 1 tie) may relieve situations like ours.
I also think that some consideration should be made to expediting trips home for these young men an women. Both the girls and we went to pks down in HH this year and did't pull into our parking
lot until midnight. I don't think that deciding a game by such chance is worth it. (Yes, we lost the shootout by the way.)

Seems like this was discussed at length last year about this same time.

I have been involved in shootouts as both a player and a coach, and I can say that I do not like them at all, whether I have won the game or lost it. Winning a game by pk's has never given me a feeling of actually deserving the win.

If a game is going to be decided by pk's, at least extend the overtime periods before going to them. This would give teams a chance to show who has the better athletes. If you can still play well after 80 minutes of regular time, and maybe another 30 or 40 overtime, that is something to be said.

For the most part, pk's seem to be pure chance - they shouldn't be - but they seem that way to me.

I'm for the point systems and ties during regular season. Do we have a quorum? sb

PKs are great, not at all chance - skill on behalf of both players. High School is about teaching - teach pks to keepers. It is exciting, for fans and players alike, it may not be the way you want to win (for keepers or field players) but its part of the game. The US has fielded some pretty good keepers over the years and is respected for that internationally, that comes from development. Whether its regular season or playoffs, it doesn't matter, field players have their 80 minutes (add for OT), let the keepers have their moment!
