Why can't each school cover the cost of their 1-2 players? Surely the booster clubs can come up with some money? If not, I am sure like Olander, the parents would be glad to donate.
I want to know why Home Depot pulled out as well, because I don't think I am shopping there anymore! Let's put our mouths and our wallets to work. This should not be over, because this FAT LADY hasn't even started singing yet!
I think it's time for the "Soccer Mom" generation to ante up. I only had a son that played high school soccer and he didn't play in this game, but had friends who did and I attended back in the mid 90s. It was a very good game and I understand the event is very nice.
Ever since the 94 World Cup, soccer has been on the boom in the USA. And ever since the 99 Women's World Cup with the infamous Brandi Chastain ripping off her jersey the term Soccer Mom has been used with this sport in exhaustion. Time for that generation of soccer folks to step up to the plate and help out.
quote: Here's how a CNN writer described the popularity of the WUSA:
"TV ratings were almost nonexistent and the league had trouble finding fans who weren't under 18 and play on a soccer team. Average attendance slipped from more than 8,000 the first season to about 6,700 a game last season."
Here's how John Hendricks, Chairman of the WUSA Board of Governors, explained its failure:
"Hendricks blamed weak corporate support for the league's failure."
So the answer is clear - incompetent leadership. Any leader with an acorn for a brain would know that sports leagues survive or fail to survive because of *fan* support, not corporate support. Corporations only "support" a sports league if they think that by buying advertising, etc. they will reap more money than they spent in the form of increased product sales, etc.
But a league without a sufficient number of fans doesn't offer that prospect.
Sounds like Hendricks expected corporations to simply donate money to a for-profit sports league, as if it were the United Way or the American Cancer Society. What an idiot.

I find it rather disturbing that the HS league cancels it with out bringing the problem to the public first to gather ideas on the topic and waits until the last minute. I am sure the money is not a great deal and there are plenty of small businesses in SC to gather the funding. Maybe I am blind but I just don't see where it could cost very much or take a lot of time to put on.
BTW: I really like the idea of the players just wearing their team jerseys.

The S.C. High School League has nothing to do with the North-South Soccer Classic. This is a function of the S.C. High School Soccer Coaches Association.
Word was given in late February regarding the Home Depot moving in a different marketing direction and thus would not be able to sponsor the North-South this year.
We're still working on this!

What happens if you have four #9's on the white team? Do three of them borrow jerseys from their HS teammates so there is no conflict? Who gets to keep #9?
T-shirts tend to resolve this conflict and the girl gets to keep her shirt (which has the N/S All-Star logo) for good.

"I'm going to email Home Depot to express my disappointment. Perhaps if they get enough of those types of correspondences, they may reconsider. fan of grits"
FYI - e-mailing HD will not help at this late date but it will prevent HD from being a sponsor in the future for SCHS soccer events. Don't burn the bridge.

people should be able to wear the same number, the ref just has to write down which school the player cam from in their little stupid black book. easy as that, it is not like the refs did anything productive this year.

I recognize that you asked the players this question, but as a parent, I am very disappointed in the cancellation. I think that any daughter who earns the honor probably has parents who have invested a lot of time (and money) in their child and are willing to do more. If funding is a problem, approach Bob Inglis. His daughter plays soccer. In the Upstate, there are parents at Eastside, Riverside, and Mauldin who would be willing to donate.
Soccer is supposed to be on the upswing and yet this seems to indicate otherwise. Why are the counties, towns, and clubs investing in more fields? Where are the corporate (Adidas, Michelin, BMW, Fluor, Milliken, Bowater) sponsors? Wouldn't Furman (Clemson, USC Upstate) be willing to showcase South Carolina talent, invite coaches to their facility?
