Girls soccer needs "tough coaches" IMO. Of course, I'm military and appreciate discipline, character, etc. I'm glad we've finally got some of this at RNE. I know my daughter has prospered under the revamped environment.

The simple fact is that 2 or 3 quality South Aiken girls were left off the all region team. Was it their coach's fault? Not sure, since there were conflicting stories about the meeting time. (The SA coach did show up at the presumed meeting time- the meeting evidently started an hour earlier and was over and gone.) In either case, I believe it is fair to question the selfish motivation of the remaining coaches to select their own players over more deserving SA players. (I'm sure each R4 coach can look back at their loss(es) to SA and think of more than two players that were key to the outcome of those games.) Where is the integrity to do what is fair and just? Should the players be denied because of the actions of the coach(es)? It is also fair to question why either of the two named SA all region players were not included in the Player of the Year mix. Back to back region co-champs, and enough offensive AND defensive accomplishments this year to justify naming either one. Shame on ALL the Region 4 coaches for allowing such a travesty!

A coach's job at those meetings is to gather all the information he/she can that it vital to helping their player's chances of making the All Region squad. How is it fair to that coach that they must equally support another team's player.
What if only two coaches showed up? Do they have every player on every team at every position memorized? Do they have nothing better to do than continuously watch and evaluate other team's players during the middle of the game?
Shame on no one but the representing coach. I don't blame my neighbor when I forget to take out my trash, and I sure wouldn't blame other coaches when I forget to take care of my own players.

This is a joke and has reduced being selected as an All Region recipient to nothing more than a trophy.
R1C, you know these players you play against like your own or you wouldn't (or shouldn't) be a coach. Why is it that coaches seem to know who to mark when they play each other.
I would be embarrassed to have been a part of the voting members. I do not know the WN coach but I can tell you that there is no way Bridget Dutcher should not have been coach of the year. 31-6 in 2 years.
THis is no surprise though. Columbia based teams get the nod any time there is an opportunity.
Congratulations to the girls that were seleted to receive "a trophy"!

I understand your frustration, as it is justified.
I just can't see any blame coming on the other coaches, though. You don't take a job and the AD say "We want you to win, the girls to have fun, the program to be clean, and by the way-make sure you pay attention to every girl on every opponent's team just in case their coach doesn't show up for the All-Region team."
I know your mad, but don't take anything away from the girls that did get the award. That isn't right.

I never did take anything away from any of the girls who were named but just feel stronly that others were more deserving.
Having a coach show up for the meeting is not identified as a prerequisite for being selteted to the All-Region team. What happens on the field is.
That is what is not reflected in the selections this year.

Hmmmmmmmmm...
Coaches nominate, coaches show up and tell why they are more deserving than others, coaches vote. That's how it work in our region, maybe it's different over there. I do wish all of them the best next year. Those are some good kids.

I agree that Meghan Wetzel should have made all region. She is an excellent player with an awesome work ethic. These awards have really been watered down when 4-5 players from any one school can make the Region or the All State team. It isn't that they are not deserving, but it just takes away the prestige that these awards bestow. In addition with a team like James Island, who have 12 seniors, many quality players just get overlooked. Not sure there is a better way of doing it...just feel sorry for the girls who don't make it. You all are winners!
