I agree completely with Chico. I don't think there is any evil or "dark force" running through the coaches that participate in the process, but I do think the process is very broken and would be negligence on the part of the coaches if they don't try and find ways to improve the process. Life is ever changing and processes need tweaking from time to time. I think this is one of those times.

Will the process ever be perfect, probably not. But coaches should strive to try.

I agree that the all-region process needs to be "tweaked" alot! I also agree with SAHS Fan that the honor has simply been reduced to a mere award! And yes this is not only limited to region IV, but have you noticed that this region is the only on the board that has sprung this much controversy on the boards. I think this tells us a little something. I do want to give congrats to the girls who were placed on the all-region team some of those girls have DI soccer in their near future!

I believe there are problems in the other regions as well, but this one started everyone talking this year. You will find every year the same topic comes up and it is ignored by most of the poeple involved...

The system is built on each coach doing their job. When one falters, the whole thing goes all to...well, you know. We're stuck until we find a way to take human error out. One method is to award region picks based on region finish. That way a coach knows for sure the most deserving people...but then a coach could "discipline" a kid by not giving them the award. Surely we can all find something more interesting to complain about. Just filled up my car...

R1C: What is the coach's primary job? Is it to be part of a team to pick the best 11-12 players, or is it to maximize the number of players that the coach puts on the all-region roster?

If you go to the bank for a loan, and you're turned down by the loan committee because one of them is sick, you think that bank is pretty poor -- that they should have processes in place to compensate. If you're an investor in a company, and an EVP gets killed in a plane crash, you still expect the company to make its numbers.

Teams and processes are put in place to build fault-capable structures that are able to handle single points of failure. I'm sure that the SCHSSCA has access to great folks who understand teams/process like you guys understand soccer; it's my humble recommendation that you guys contact someone to help in this.

P.S. Gas is $1.99 down here now.

R1C, a lot of regions have adopted that policy:

15 player All-Region Team (6 teams in region)
Champion - 5
Runner-Up - 4
3rd/4th - 2
5th/6th - 1

Most regions have the system in place for all sports -- sometimes that works and sometimes that doesn't. I find it hard to believe that teams that finish outside of the top two teams have better players than the teams that finish as Champion or Runner-Up.

Sounds like the girls coaches in Region 4-4A need to come up with a better solution and reward the players that are deserving based on their merits from the field of play. Also, how can a coach not show up to the region meeting?

Better team = Better players

Makes sense to me. I could understand a mix up if two or three coaches miss a meeting, but not if there is only one. I wasn't there so I can't say. I just think that it's a pretty important day and you make sure you don't miss it.

For the record (again), the SA coach DID make the trip to the meeting, at the time she understood it to be. The meeting took place an hour earlier (due to an alleged communication error?). There is no merit to suggestions she intentionally missed or boycotted the meeting. She had every intent to attend the meeting. It is also unfair to suggest a connection to missing a few practices. She has a young child who is (and should be) a higher priority in her life, when necessary.

a fan: Here's a perspective that no one else has taken in all of this: the coaches that were there selected two South Aiken players instead of adding two more of their own players. If a conspiracy was hatched among all but the South Aiken coach [I'm keying on the term "alleged" above], then I would have hoped that the conspirators would have had the brains and the courage to go all the way and shut out South Aiken completely.

Again, I don't see any villians here, either from South Aiken or the rest of the high schools, just a potential process problem.
