In girls' soccer, BE is to 2A soccer as Princess Dianah was to a North Charleston Beauty Queen contest.

Yeah...I agree, but they don't look at it like that. When any "smaller" school beats a larger school, it is usually always viewed as an upset. BE is a great team and so is B-C. I'm not taking anything away from either. The point that many people try to make is that 2A soccer doesn't matter. Maybe not to 3A and 4A schools, but it matters to us 2A people. To brush aside 2A soccer just because we don't have the Chapins (oh yeah, they just went 3A this year..I think they were 2A last year), Wandos, WA, Mauldin, B-C, Aiports, etc. really isn't fair or justified. Emerald is a great team along with Christ Church and B-E. Let's face it though, comparing 2A schools to larger schools is like comapring Kentucky football with FSU. YOu can't compare them because there is not a level playing field when it comes to programs and funds and playing experience.

You gave my team kudos this year and I thanked you for that in a earlier post. My team earned kudos the extremely hard way this year. We cut our teeth in Varsity by having our butts cut on more than one occassion, thanks to your team! :-) So I can't repeat a fact? I'll change the word upset to win, ok? I haven't posted anything negative about B-C. Does that diminish the dominance that B-C had this year? No way. B-C is a great team and if you look in the predictions for the state championship, I picked them because I knew that they had it in them.
The bottom line is this: Why does everyone rip on 2A soccer? Just because we aren't that big and can't beat everyone that we play and it is usua, but 2A soccer is on the rise. Watch Swansea next year and see what happens. We graduate no one and have some good freshman coming up.

I'm not taking shots at B-C's quality or character, which is what debase means. I already said that they are a great team and I truly mean that. They ripped us apart (which might not have been hard for them to do against us).

Swansea coach, thanks for the English lesson. Now back to soccer. I never said you said anything bad about BC. I just said any attempt would ruffle my feathers. Having said that, I do understand your point, but 3A has often been shunned by 4A "lovers" as not good enough as well. So technically, we are in the same boat. I applaud your team for it's accomplishments. And I have to say, it always felt good to beat a 4A team during my coaching tenure, even if they weren't a top 4A team. Why? Because we were constantly told we didn't matter. Only 4A mattered. And as I am sure many can tell you, BE may be seen as a smaller school, but any team that can "recruit" their players, has a leg up on the rest of the teams, often in any classification. I've seen BE dismantle some really good 4A teams. So I still contend that the final score of 2-1, BE over BC in OT was not an upset of any kind. Not even the slightest. As a former coach, it was always my intention to play the best teams I could during the year, because the playoffs were what mattered and playing tough teams prepares you for those games. It exposes your weaknesses more than playing a "soft" team does. I never held any team in any classification with lower standards than others. I was extremely happy when 4A changed their playoff requirements, because they would consider playing 3A teams on a regular basis during the season. So again, my only point was that the BE over BC result was not an upset. Pick another 2A winner over a 3A or 4A team and maybe that is true. But BE has been a juggernaut for years, regardless of who they play or what classification they are part of. I hope Swansea does become an even better team in the future. It would seem that the schools want the teams to travel less and having another team like Swansea close by...to add to the Chapins, Drehers, AC Floras, Airports, etc...will only serve to benefit the other teams in the area by continuing to play better competition. Kudos to you for the job you've done! I look forward to seeing them play next year!

Thanks for your support of BC all season, and you did appreciate my comments about Swansea...but I wasn't kidding, your girls have heart, their Coach cares and they will be a team to reckon with as soon as next year! I agree with fhsc though, us 3A teams are as overlooked when we go up against 4A as you all are against us! I guess that is to be expected, bigger is supposed to be better! Ha, tell that to Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt huh?

BC would have loved the opportunity to play against both WA and FM, we might not have won, but we would have left it all on the field...that is all you can expect from your players, 100%+. Good luck next season, and hope to see all your players playing club on a competitive team!

Thoughts on the Bishop England soccer program:

Any one who follows girl’s high school soccer in South Carolina knows that the Bishops are one of the top-flight teams. Their facilities are second to none in South Carolina, their coaching is excellent and have won four straight soccer titles. Sports Illustrated picked Bishop England as the best high school sports program in the state.

Playing Bishop England on their home field is a new and eye-opening experience for most teams in the state. The field is immaculate and has dimensions larger than most fields in the state. The field seems, when one is used to playing on converted football fields, much larger than normal. If you don’t bring your “A” game, you can expect a loss. Even if you play well, it is never a foregone conclusion that you will win. I say this without regards to the classification of the opposing team. 2-A, 3-A, and 4A teams all know that they are in for a tough game when they come to Bishop England.

Hats off to the fighting Bishops for their most recent state championship victory over Christ Church. They dominated and deserved the win.

Thanks...too bad their Coach who cares won't be there next year to see the three years of building a program take more flight. I'll be buying a ticket like everyone else. First year in Varsity: Beating the #10 team in the state, making it to 2nd round of playoffs, ending up the season #10 in the state...not too shabby...and playing who we played...Sumter, Crestwood, Emerald, B-C, Airport (twice), Barnwell, North Augusta, and White Knoll...we definitely payed our dues this season, as did ya'll!

It's all relative....some small schools have big-time programs, some large schools struggle. If B-E beats Rock Hill in girls soccer, it would not be considered an upset.

If they beat Rock Hill in football.......there's another story.
