Courtesy of Mr. McCoy: Lady Jackets Lose Close Battle
Fort Mill finished the regular season tonight on a losing note, falling to Providence 1-0. The Panthers entered the contest ranked #4 in NC AAAA, with only two 1-goal losses to South Meck to blemish their record.
Both sides battled hard, although Providence seemed quicker to the ball 60% of the time. The Panthers’ All-State forward, Chrissy Caruso (College of Charleston), notched the only score of the night when she was briefly left with a gap in the box at 26:24. The first half concluded with Providence leading in shots 6-3. Fort Mill gradually ramped up the pressure in the second half, but could not quite close the deal, as Providence was able to repeatedly disrupt the Lady Jackets’ possession.
Fort Mill’s seniors kept goal on Senior Night. Jen Shideler went the first 18:30 with 2 saves, and Liz Ostrander finished the match with 4 saves. For the night, Providence out-shot Fort Mill 11-6, and they also owned the corner kick advantage 7-5. The Panthers recorded 2 saves in goal.
The Lady Jackets open the state playoffs in one week, entertaining the number 4 seed from region 4. At this point, their opponent will likely either be South Aiken or White Knoll. Fort Mill finishes the regular season 17-4, with 95 goals for and only 4 goals against.
