Fall sports have additional practice time during the spring, like football and volleyball for example. Basketball teams hold tournaments during the summer and have 10 competitive days in which they scrimmage. Soccer is allowed this, if I'm not mistaken, but we have been one of the last spring sports to pick up on this. Is there really a need for this, though? Club takes care of the extra practice for most of the affluent and urban high schools, but teams (like underog Lincoln!) might benefit greatly.

Should spring sports have a fall practice or should we start a summer league in our local areas?

Somebody tell me what areas do not have access to club soccer in the fall? Up here in York County, we drive 70 - 90 minutes each way for games in Cola, Lex and Mesa. Clubs like BridgeFA, CESA and CUFC are "reaching out" so that no child is left behind.

Why do we need to organize school soccer training in the fall?

In the hot bed talent pool of the Fort Mill area, you must not have such a problem. I was speaking to the underserved, and unable kids/parents of certain areas...for example Westside, Lincoln, Gaffney and so on. All this money talk has prompted a "fair treatment" thought. Do you know why spring sports can't train in the fall? It would seem fair, wouldn't it?

Access might not be the problem. Some people don't bling bling you like you, Hurst. Surely some of you saw his stretch Jeep Liberty at the State Champoinships.

Gaffney is 15 minutes from Spartanburg and 35 minutes to Greenville. I think if they want to play, they can. Where is Westside?

How do they pay for it? Maybe you've found a way to overcome the free/reduced lunch/I don't have the money/single parent problem over in Tega Kay. Enlighten us, please.

Westside is located near the eastern shore of beautiful Lake Hartwell, on the leftern outskirts of Anderson, the Electric City.

OK, it's not the geographical distance that seems to be the hang up here, it's the finances.

If the kid is an exceptional athlete/player, no problem.....scholarship. Most clubs build this into their budgets and don't like turning away good players.

If you are building a foundation and starting from scratch (Gaffney)....now you have a problem. These kids need training and development, and unless the mens & womens soccer teams from Limestone College have recently screwed up and are required to do "community service", this ain't coming free.

So.....to your point......now that we have reached the age of professional paid coaching....Gaffney doesn't stand a chance in soccer versus Fort Mill. Fort Mill has options available to them that Gaffney does not. And until somebody thinks they can make a buck mining soccer talent in Gaffney....they are not going to get any better.

Exactly. Thus the need for high school soccer to take advantage of its opportunities. There is hope, small albeit, for these kids.

You are assuming then that the local high school coach has the resources available to make these kids better in the off-season.

How much better are you looking to get?
