If you "don't know what I'm talking about" then I guess there is not much more for us to speak about unless you want to talk about some more Larry the Cable guy idioms, the NFL and SCYSA, or pass interference.

>>[Big Daddy] And Chico.....what do you want to bet that there are as many kids playing out of state for CESA as there are SC kids playing where my kids play? Same with Bridge....Aiken, Hilton Head, etc.<<

But...that doesn't matter, right? All that matters is that we make South Carolina soccer more competitive. So if we can get the SCYSA to make this decision, it will be a big win, right? I'm sure you'll quickly and gladly sign up to move your kid to a South Carolina club, right? And the good news is that I don't think that the NCYSA will try to invent new rules out of whole cloth -- so maybe the South Carolina clubs will get to keep their out of state kids while we restrict South Carolina kids from going out of state. I really think this could be a winning appeal for increasing the parity of South Carolina soccer within the state.

>>Please don't confuse parental freedom of choice with organizational behaviour which is both predatory and oligopolic. <<

Help me to understand your terms. I can understand accusing any club of predatory behavior if they were to try to restrict choice within their area. Is that what any club is doing? I've repeatedly said that if any club wants to offer services in any area, I'm all for it.

Nastradamus: You're not alone. Trying to stretch an analogy between the NFL and the SCYSA while ignoring the fact that one has as a mission to maximize profits for owners while the other has the mission to develop and promote youth club soccer with a bunch of non-profit member clubs was pretty much nonsensical.

>>[Socdad] FINALLY--Someone who is not drinking the "red" kool-aid! Big Daddy--thank you for hitting the nail on the head with your comments. Your comment in regards to CESA's attempt to set up shop in the Midlands "has nothing to do with increasing competition, and everything to do with minimizing competition and consolidating control" most likely has more merit than most folks would like to admit.<<

Again, I'd understand your argument completely if CESA were trying to keep a club from offering services in Greenville. But when a club tries to offer services in a market with several other clubs, it would appear to me that the club is attempting to compete on services.

Here's the fundamental problem with your premise. I believe that what concerns you is that CESA wants to monopolize not services but instead wants to monopolize state challenge cups. I'm sure that they are guilty of wanting to win as many state challenge cups as possible. That is not equivalent to wanting to monopolize services in an area.

If this isn't clear, please let me know and I'll try to explain the difference in more detail.

Comeon now Chico, you can do better than this.

I never said anything as fact about CASl/ CASL VA. I said I was told something.....if its not so its not so. IN any case, what is the relevance?

"Depends on where they move and how far they want to travel. I know of ODP kids in the upstate that play at CESA...but also that play at CFC, USA, CASC, and outside of the state in Atlanta."

Yikes...before you didn't want poor kids from Raleigh to hav ot dirve to Greensboro? I assume these CLubs exceed 50 miles?

Look.....there are always good reasons for doing different, but typically a parent will choose a local option over a distant option. So a kid within 30-40 miles of Greenville will in fact likely choose CESA, his only choice.

"I actually want two things. First, I'd like Columbia area kids to have more choice than they have today"

What about us po folk in York County? We don't get mo stinkin choices? Right.....

And before you play the race card and the class card....make sure every poor minority kid in your backyard is taken care of before you try to help your reach out to Columbia

I ain't buyin it cuz.

Look up the definition of oligopoly in the dictionary. In it, you may find as an example, a state with 100 Clubs or so and virtually every State Cup with 1 or 2 names on it.

Chico,

I think CESA looks at a largely rural State filled with tiny little CLubs. They see 3 large metro areas....2 of which are already staked out. The third....can either be absorbed or become a competitor. Absorb now....to avoid anothe Super Club competitor. God forbid the Midstate district does what the Bridge folks did.

Mike/Nostra,

Are you talking about Northside-CSC?

CSC didn't go after N'side......the N'side folks made a decision to merge in order to survive. They looked around at their merger options and chose CSC.

I doubt this effects Discoveries at all.....and would argue that its apples and oranges with CESA-COLA. CSC didn't go rolling into York county. No advertising, no nothing.

Chico....

I have to say that you either know something we do not or something changed.

I will put the facts as I know them and you guys can correct

For immediate release 11/14/05

Carolina Elite Soccer Academy (CESA) announced that they will establish a program in the Columbia area beginning in the spring of 2006. Jim Heilich, who has been a CESA staff member since the club’s inception and former Columbia Soccer Club Director Eddie Crosby will help to implement this new program. Chris Christian, who led the Columbia Soccer Club Under 13 Boys to the Challenge Cup State Championship last season, will also join Heilich and Crosby as a member of the CESA staff. CESA has offered training in the Columbia area over the past year and is now committed to forming recreation, academy and select teams based in Columbia.

CESA is in the process of hiring other high profile coaches from the Columbia area. Co-Executive Director Andrew Hyslop said, “ We have had a great deal of interest from players, parents and coaches in the Columbia area and Pearse and I feel sure that when we provide top quality coaching and a solid infrastructure our program will be well received in Columbia.”

Please contact Andrew Hyslop at 864-329-1113 for additional information regarding CESA and immediate plans for the Columbia area.

2- Mr Crosby has a fall-out of sorts...details not known but lets just say that he was attempting to start the program... I do not recall the discussion being over under priviliged underserved youth

3- CESA is unexpectedly caught in an unwanted situation and retracted the announcement above.

4- CESA enters agreement to support CRSA in providing underserved underpriviliged youth opportunity (I cannot find the announcement)

5 - CRSA proudly proclaims that the arrangement will provide fields for the CESA coaching staff to perform the miracle.

As you can see I am a little skeptical.

Why the turn around from the first announcement?

CESA has players coming not only from the midlands but from the coast and obviously driving to the upstate is out of the question.

Therefore they need to train in the midlands.

If the idea is to provide underserved underpriviliged youth opportunity, why not just provide the coaching needs to CRSA free of an exclusive partnership....marketing wise it would have been just as good. The problem is that they could not do the training they really want.

The truth is only known by a small number of people.

I firmly believe that CESA is able to attract the backing and sponsorship opportunities because of the elite status they exude, same with CASL and Silverbacks, etc.. nothing wrong with this but it was achieved on the elite teams not on the REC, or underpriviliged work.

So what does CESA really want and why is it so necessary to expand into the Cola raea?

This I believe is the underlying problem and the reason for the skepticism shown.

I for one feel that an elite club is necessary for Cola....CESA , CUFC... or whatever name I do not care.
