>>[Belligerant] I’m not sure how SCYSA could approve a club and then turn right around several months later and say, “Uh, we thinks we mighta made a little boo boo….remember when we said you were approved? Well, pretend like that never happened.”<<

Respectfully, I don't think you fully grasp of the logical inconsistencies that the SCYSA is capable of. Let's remember, the state challenge cup program had a paid full-page advertisement from CESA for its Columbia expansion that the SCYSA accepted. Then it issued this decision.

Someone somewhere said that CESA didn't follow the correct processes. There were no correct processes -- please, show me in the bylaws where any such process exists. Was CESA trying to be sneaky? Sure...that's why they paid for and got accepted a full-page advertisement in the SCYSA state challenge cup program.

I'm afraid that logic isn't going to take you very far on trying to predict the future actions of the SCYSA.

>> [Big Daddy] Chico,

Paraphrasing you, why do you say the 50% rule is short term? What, long-term is going to be different, in your estimation?<<

I said I didn't think it would have a short-term impact. I don't know of many teams consisting of 50% of players from outside of a district. I think it could have a longer-term impact if South Carolina clubs improve and draw more kids from outside of their district.

>>And why do you oppose it? <<

Two reasons: (1) it attempts to take a small state with 4.5M people and effectively makes it smaller by limiting inter-district operations and (2) it was created seemingly out of whole cloth rather than going through the bylaw modification process.

SC teams have enough demographic and historical problems trying to compete against teams from the larger metropolitan areas outside of our state (e.g., Atlanta) -- I hate to see the SCYSA attempt to put yet another obstacle in the way.

>>Do you really want a clear and unfettered market place without any rules other than survival of the fittest?<<

I've been through the bylaws, code of ethics, rules, etc. of the SCYSA -- there are pages and pages of rules. In just my opinion, I don't think we suffer from a lack of rules.

>>Many of us are free market folks in our "private" lives....but the meaning of free market varies widely. And when borders begin to blur it can get really weird. Everyone loves the cheap prices of Wal-Mart....but look at the textile jobs lost in SC over the last 10 years.<<

Not to go on too much of a tangent...but, yes...put me in the pro-Wal*Mart contingent.

>>Doing your own thing is kind of a "Turkish Delight" treat. It tastes great....but soon becomes a habit and then you are enslaved by it.

In the Bible Paul said, "everything is permissible, but not everything is beneficial."

Some rules are wrong and some rules maintain order.<<

I know we've rehashed this several times, so I'll absolutely keep this short. I absolutely understand that you believe this is a good thing. See my reasons above for why I don't like the rule and why I think it's a bad thing.

>>I think a rule that prevents CLubs from partnering
and offering better opportunities for kids is wrong. I think rules that keep Club A in 1 part of the State from overwhelming Club B from
another part of the state is a good thing. <<

I agree with you on partnering. I disagree with you with respect to the "overwhelming" argument. Why? The same reason that I'm glad that there's a Wal*Mart where I live. Studies show that grocery prices go down an average of 15% in an area Wal*Mart opens a store. Other grocery stores find that they have to either compete better on price, or compete on some other aspect of the shopping experience.

I'd like to see the Columbia select clubs compete on who can offer the best services. One might pick a lower cost model, one might pick better developmental training, another might pick the best elite teams. Unfortunately, we're not going to see that -- because instead they'll focus on complaints to limit competition rather than focusing on an increased level of services.

>>Is there a subjective line there? A contradiction? I'm sure there is....but I guess only if you look hard enough.<<

I understand your point and honestly don't think that there's a contradiction.

>>From what I understand Bridge is open to any CLub that wants to participate. No one is being excluded. Thats different from the situation we argued about a few nights ago, which was more of a zero sum thing.<<

Again, let me make this clear: I'm not arguing that Bridge is illegal based on either what I want or because it makes sense -- I'm simply reading the precise language of the SCYSA decision, then I'm reading the precise language that Bridge uses to describe itself, and I'm drawing what appears to me to be the inescapable conclusion that the SCYSA has outlawed partnerships, alliances, or whatever else you want to call cooperation among clubs.

I wondered about that one myself. I don't know, but it sure would seem appropriate, wouldn't it?

Nastra this is yo Mama calling....I want you to clean out them big old dumbo ears of yours and lissen up!!

SCSYA regulates SCYSA Clubs. Charlotte falls outside of SCYSA jurisdiction. CESA-Columbia falls within SCYSA jurisdiction. Boy, are you lissenen to me? 'Cause what part of that don't you understand?

Now, if them folks at SCYSA think its a problem they probably need to talk to their daddies at USYSA, 'cause i reckon inter-state relations falls under their bailwick.

Now, technically, a person if they were so inclined could look at the two situations and see similar issues. But remember....Northside went to Charlotte, not vice versa. Not the case in Columbia....where CESA was seen as a risk and a threat. Right or not, fair or not.

The York county Clubs know that Charlotte isn't a threat, except for the reruiting of top level players. Many of the best players go to Charlotte and then return for whatever reason. They cease to be dominant players, maybe they hit U15 and want to play HS ball. But eventually the players return. If they are stilll top notch they go to CESA or Columbia. In some cases they stay home and play for Discoveries or Tega Cay.

The 2 difference between the 2 situations is that 1 was unwanted and one was wanted, and one was intra-state and one was inter-state.

Boy. Are we squared up now? Now, I'll hear no more of your whinin' about passinnerference calls or your darn sorry Seahwaks. Beecasue what in the name of John Brown by the way, is a Seahawk anyhow?

Big Daddy: There is no more "Northside", right? That's the reason that you're right and the SCYSA doesn't have purview in this case; Northside simply went away and became a set of teams that play for Charlotte.

Concerning "wanted" and "unwanted", always remember that when there are multiple people involved, it's just a matter of degree. CESA originally announced the Columbia expansion due to demand from players and parents and coaches who "wanted" this (that's the reason for the demand for a list of all players, parents, and coaches I believe.) It's Ron Tryon and the SCYSA "special commission" that specifically "unwanted" this.

When Bridge was formed, I posted a lengthy rant about the Mt. P situation, here's the shorten version.

I'm sure our club's arrangement is rare in the youth soccer world. Hungryneck was the prior club, private, like most clubs everywhere. It merged (notice the tie-in to this thread's topic) with the Town of Mt. Pleasant for a variety of reasons to form a hybrid club. The people running the soccer program are soccer people like any other club and much of the organization, committees, etc. are still in place. However, they're doing it under the umbrella of a town government. And I think that's where the hard part lies.

The soccer people running the club have bosses in the town's recreation dept. who report to the mayor and town council. So, think about it. The city collects taxes, builds and maintains facilities, hires people to run programs then they're expected to send the cream of the town's crop to somebody else's program?

Here's an analogy: Bill Gates produces an internet browser called Internet Explorer. But somebody else, Netscape, produces one that's better for high end internet browsing. Do people really expect Bill Gates to send customers to Netscape so they can enjoy a better internet surfing experience? (DISCLAIMER: The names in this analogy are fictional and any relation to real people or events is unintentional)

So, back to the Town of Mt. P and the Bridge, we can preach "for the good of the game and kids" till we're blue in the face but don't expect elected officials to make that leap.

Soccer Watcher,

But, the problem with Mt. Pleasant is that they ARE losing players to the Bridge and WILL CONTINUE to do so. It is out of their hands as it is today. If they join the Bridge FA, they can at least take some credit for the success.

All they can say now is "Some of the best Bridge FA players started their careers at MPSC."

It's like that "Stolen Cheese" book...MPSC can either change, or suffer from their decisions...

Good post Chico. I understand your perspective...we just disagree thats all. To me, the districts in SC are big enough for now.

The districts need to organize and focus and rationalize where it makes sense within the districts. It kind of looks to me like thats been largely done on the outer part of the state, not in the center. When thats done....then if it makes sense for CESA to move out into the state, then good luck. But until then, I think the Columbia folks deserve the chance to address their issues before CESA fixes them.

Not saying I'm right....just my opinion.
