When Bridge was formed, I posted a lengthy rant about the Mt. P situation, here's the shorten version.
I'm sure our club's arrangement is rare in the youth soccer world. Hungryneck was the prior club, private, like most clubs everywhere. It merged (notice the tie-in to this thread's topic) with the Town of Mt. Pleasant for a variety of reasons to form a hybrid club. The people running the soccer program are soccer people like any other club and much of the organization, committees, etc. are still in place. However, they're doing it under the umbrella of a town government. And I think that's where the hard part lies.
The soccer people running the club have bosses in the town's recreation dept. who report to the mayor and town council. So, think about it. The city collects taxes, builds and maintains facilities, hires people to run programs then they're expected to send the cream of the town's crop to somebody else's program?
Here's an analogy: Bill Gates produces an internet browser called Internet Explorer. But somebody else, Netscape, produces one that's better for high end internet browsing. Do people really expect Bill Gates to send customers to Netscape so they can enjoy a better internet surfing experience? (DISCLAIMER: The names in this analogy are fictional and any relation to real people or events is unintentional)
So, back to the Town of Mt. P and the Bridge, we can preach "for the good of the game and kids" till we're blue in the face but don't expect elected officials to make that leap.
