Some of the newcomers to SCSOCCER.COM might not know that Troy Lesesne was selected as the 2000-2001 S.C. Player of the Year by Gatorade and was also named the 2000 High School State Player of the Year by NSCAA/adidas.

In his senior year of high school, Lesesne led Brookland-Cayce to the Class 3A Lower State Championship, a 26-2-1 record, and Region 5-3A title. A 2004 December graduate of the College of Charleston, Lesesne wrapped up his prep career played in the 2001 North-South All-Star Game at Mount Pleasant. All told, Lesesne finished as the all-time leading scorer at BCHS with 285 points (99 Goals and 87 Assists). A four-year letterman, Lesesne capped off his final year with a school-record 121 points with program highs of 42 goals and 37 assists.

At Charleston, Lesesne played as a true freshman and then was a three-year starter for the Cougars, which compiled a 47-28-7 (.616) record from 2001-2004. During that span, the CofC posted three-straight winning seasons and culminated that run with a 17-6-1 record this past fall, which included a Southern Conference Tournament Championship and an advancement to the Second Round of the NCAA Men's College Cup. Lesesne was tabbed this past season to the NSCAA All-American Third Team and was a First Team All-Southern Conference selection.

I know I am a bit prejudiced since I have known Troy since his elementary school days. His parents, Bill and Ellen, did a wonderful job with his upbringing, but let me state that I don't know of any other player from the state of South Carolina that has worked harder than Troy at his craft. He truly deserves this opportunity and am quite sure he will do well with the Charleston Battery!

I heard that Kevin, Kyle & Eudy are gonna spring for free bus rides, free tickets, and a hospitality booth at all Battery games for all the devoted forum fans and FOT (Friends of Troy). Did I hear that right, guys?

The Battery have already announced they have signed Troy. Well done. A good, hard working and exciting player. He's very fast and has a very good touch on the ball. Additionally, I haven't seen a player in a long time that can curve a ball as much as him on free kicks and corners. Very dangerous. It wouldn't surprise me if he immediately is fighting for a starting spot.

I guess this means Troy won't be serving up great food at Moe's this summer.

I wouldn't be so sure, this is the USL, not a European league. Plus, there's the chick-magnet factor to consider.......

From today's Charleston paper:

Ex-Cougar Lesesne signs with Battery

BY ANDREW MILLER
Of The Post and Courier Staff

Troy Lesesne won't have to travel far to continue his soccer career. The former College of Charleston midfielder, who helped the Cougars to a Southern Conference championship and an NCAA tournament berth last season, has signed to play for the Charleston Battery this coming season.
Lesesne was the Battery's second-round draft pick in Tuesday's USL First Division draft. The Battery picked Cougars defender Drew Cavanagh in the first round.

"Honestly, things couldn't have turned out better for me," said the 5-7, 145-pound Columbia native. "I think it's a great opportunity for me to continue my soccer career with the Battery here in Charleston."

Lesesne, a four-year Cougars starter, totaled 10 goals and 15 assists in 78 college games. He led the SoCon with 10 assists in 2004.

"I think Troy is a very exciting, very dangerous player," Battery coach Mike Anhaeuser said. "He had a great senior year. He can play on the left or right side, and he's very creative when he has the ball. I've watched him develop over the last four years."

Lesesne caught the eye of Anhaeuser during Battery preseason scrimmages against the Cougars.

"Troy was very confident with the ball," Anhaeuser said. "He proved he could compete with the players not only on the Battery, but players in this league. We've got high expectations for Troy. We certainly feel like he can make our 18-man roster, and hopefully earn a starting position sooner rather than later."

The transition from the wide-open style of the college game to the tight-marking style at the pro level will be Lesesne's biggest immediate challenge, Anhaeuser said.

Anhaeuser said he hopes to sign Cavanagh. "Drew is still waiting to see what happens with MLS," Anhaeuser said.

Fellow CofC teammate, Drew Cavanaugh, who had been training with FC Dallas in MLS, was released on 2/26. He was initially drafted by the Battery and has trained with them in the past. Good chance he might be back in Charleston.

Also, rumor is that a 3rd Coug, Ben Hollingsworth, is also talking to the Battery. Three Cougars on the Battery team? That would be a great draw for the locals.

Stay tuned..........

I remember playing against troy in high school, wasn't the fastest player on the field (jabari seabrook was incase you're wondering) but i never played on the same field with or against somebody who wanted to win more and who wanted to be the best on the field. this hurts me saying this, but he's the only bearcat i wish had gotten a ring. best of luck to you troy!
