Bobby Hammond also confirmed what Greg Elliott had told me, that Drew Cavanagh was offered a developmental deal but turned it down to sign for Charleston Battery. According to Elliott, Aaron Pitchkolan was kept instead.

Figured I'd put this here since the majority of it is about Troy.

Battery rookies impressive

BY ANDREW MILLER
Of The Post and Courier Staff

It's only the preseason, but Charleston Battery coach Mike Anhaeuser likes what he sees from his young team.

Despite having a lineup filled with rookies, Anhaeuser already thinks the Battery will be a mentally tough team this season.

He has seen that mental toughness up close during the Carolina Challenge Cup against two Major League Soccer teams. Charleston will face San Jose at 6 p.m. today at Blackbaud Stadium in the final day of the Carolina Challenge Cup. D.C. United will take on Columbus in the final game of tournament at 8:15 p.m.

Charleston will open its USL First Division season April 23 against Atlanta.

"We've only had about 10 days of training, but I think we've got a resilient group of hungry players that are very passionate about the game," Anhaeuser said."

Charleston lost to Columbus, 1-0, last weekend, in the opening came of the Carolina Challenge Cup. The Battery followed that up with a 2-2 tie Wednesday night against D.C. United, the defending MLS champions. The Battery trailed in both games of the tournament, but never stopped attacking, Anhaeuser said.

"I think that's what pleased me the most about them,'' he said. "They stepped up and competed and I think that's a good sign for things to come this season."

The Battery actually led D.C. United, 2-1, late in the game, but gave up a goal in the final five minutes of the match.

Former College of Charleston standouts Drew Cavanaugh and Troy Lesesne got their first taste of professional soccer during the last two games. Cavanaugh and Lesesne both started Wednesday night against D.C. United.

"Considering that this was their first professional experience I thought they both played well," Anhaeuser said. "I think playing against Columbus and D.C. United was a good test for both of them. I think they realize now what it's going to take to not only play at the professional level, but what it's going to take to succeed at this level."

Lesesne said his baptism into the professional ranks has been an eye-opening experience.

"The atmosphere at both games was unbelievable," Lesesne said. "I came in as a substitute against Columbus and I really wasn't that nervous. But making my first start against D.C. United, I was a little bit nervous. It took a while to settle into that game.

"The pro game is a lot faster than the college game. You've got to think the game so much faster. You've always got to be one or two steps ahead or you're not going to be able to make a play."

Ben Hollingsworth, the third College of Charleston player on the Battery's roster, has missed the first two games of the tournament with an injury. However, he could see some action tonight against San Jose.

"I think Ben is going to get cleared by our doctors to play (tonight)," Anhaeuser said. "I'm looking forward to seeing him on the field if he's healthy enough to play."
