The bigger mystery is why the FA would let him stay at the helm for the tournament when his future replacement is an assistant there and already has a relationship with the players. They know how conservative and tactically naive he is and when he announced his squad they still had time to say to him, "let's have Steve take over from here" and McClaren still at that point had a chance to change it before the deadline.
