What is going on in this state? Over the last few months many clubs have had to cancel tournaments due to lack of entries. Do we have too many tournaments? Are local teams and clubs not willing to support each other? Does everyone feel they need to play out of state?

Good topic Mom. What do you need to do today to attract a decent response to a South Carolina tournament?

Location - I will go to Charleston (or Hilton Head, or Savannah for that matter) for a U-9 girls recreational 3v3 tournament. It's a vacation destination....parents love it.

Fields - I'd go to Manchester Meadows in Rock Hill for any tournament as well, just for the opportunity to play on those fields. Having shopping, restaurants, hotels and entertainment so close by is also a major plus.

Competition - Although Columbia and Greenville have done a great job of hosting tournaments in the past (and Columbia gets an additional good mark simply for being centrally located), I'm not going there unless I get the right competition. If my kid's on a premier team, you better be attracting some big guns. If my kid is on a SCYSA classic team, there better be comparable teams from FL, GA and NC.

I'd put my nickel on 'new' competition, and actually take a mark away from Columbia because I'm more likely to see the same teams that I see during the regular season at the classic or challenge level .. whereas Greenville and James Island/Savannah have a more geographic pull for out of state teams.

Could you (someone) please list the tournaments that have been cancelled, along with their sponsoring club and their target level of competition (recreation, academy, classic, challenge, premier)?

My two cents...

To me depends on the competition for the age group. For example the competition may be fine at the younger ages but not at the older. Also you will not attract many NC teams U15 and up during the fall for boys and the spring for girls simply because of HS season.


Lastly, I do not want to pay $400 and play the same team I just played last week.

good point. as i recall cesa has to turn away 50+ teams at some of its tournaments.
