I'll say one thing for Dorman, their coach knows how to win with what he has. I personally think Mauldin is a stronger / more skilled team however. All Dorman seems to do, at least when they play the stronger teams is play that "pack it in the back" style of play and hope to go to PK's. That has worked for them so far, but I don't think they can win state, or even get to state that way. I personally hate the fact that HS does not end in a tie after playing regulation, and 2 OT periods. I hate to see any team loose a game that they did not get beat in, but hey this has been discussed many times before on this board and that's the way it is. Give the Dorman coach some credit he know's what it will take to win a game even if it is in PK's. Maybe the other teams out there should try and practice PK's a little more and maybe they can win some of these PK games against Dorman. I know for a fact Lexington needs to practice them more, don't you agree truefan??

What does the pack it in formation look like? Where they restricted to half field or only playing with one striker? I've got a game or two coming up in which I need a good strategy.

What Dorman does is very effective and it gets the necessary result. The challenge to all of their opponents is this....score first. Has anyone gone 1-0 up on Dorman yet this year?

Regarding PK's and OT's. I also agree that regular season games should end in a draw after 80 minutes. No overtime. The AD's have been meeting in Charleston the past three days and frankly, I don't how much they discuss soccer or even if this is the time to introduce any proposed changes. I did e-mail my AD and asked him to investigate/propose the following:

1. No OT's or PK's in regular season matches, let the draw stand.
2. Neutral sites (college campuses) for all state semi-final matches (the final should stay at USC).

You haven't been exposed to hockey?

Yes I have, and I have NEVER seen a championship decided with a player standing still playing it to a goalie standing still. Have you?

Would you still feel this way if Lexington were in the state final and had to start at midnight because the A/AA and AAA championship matches went into umpteen overtimes?

Yes.

I think winning and fun are correlated highly. But if one confuses torturing players in the supposed name of winning with playing hard and working to win, then the fun is lost and all is lost, I think.

I don't necessarily disagree with you. However, I also think that PK's is a ridiculous way to declare a winner. Why not alternating corner kicks, or free kicks from a designated spot? The entire team is involved, and the onus of winning and losing does not fall to just one player on either team. It is supposed to be a team game, why not get everyone on the team involved in winning and losing? Especially when it comes to determining champions!

I never said and do not think DHS is "playing for PKs"; they are playing the soccer they can and need to in order to win and excel.

I think it is simplistic and misguided to accuse them of "playing for PKs," as it is to denigrate that strategy of anyone who does do it.

I don't see "playing for PK's" anywhere in my post??? My post was posted at exactly the same time as truefan's. Thus, my reference to "agree with everything posted above", does not include truefan's post.

Not sure HS sports is intended to please fans, by the way.

I did not say this in my post. If you inferred it, then it is your assumption and not necessarily my intent. I, in fact, don't think that any athletic endeavor that attaches itself to an educational endeavor SHOULD be intended to please fans (or parents for that matter).

I posted this as a reply to your post because it appears that you were replying to my post. If not, my apologies!

Hurst, when you ask if anyone has gone up 1-0 on Dorman this year... do you mean scoring first in regulation? Or in OT? If so, Eastside has done both. The "pack it in" strategy only goes so far.....

Strode,

Thanks. And the final result each time Dorman didn't score first against a good team (I realize one match was only a scrimmage).....was a Lady Cav loss.

By the way, I'm not ripping the strategy. You play with the cards that you are dealt and I'm a defensive-minded coach myself. What Dorman has done these past two years is truely amazing. They are to be congratulated for their skill, team play, discipline and athleticism. They will be strong for years to come.

PK's were good enough for the world cup!
I think those who don't understand soccer call strong defense and patience "packing it in the back".Why should a coach cater to his opponents strength and ignore his own. Every coach in every sport is supposed to have a game plan and help his team execute that game plan. Why is it not accepted in soccer to have strong defensive play? Nobody ever puts down a strong defense by a football team. In fact those stats are celebrated.People call it a "stingy defense". Should teams just keep running the ball on a solid defensive line? No, you open up the passing game and hope for the best. In baseball much is said about a no hitter and perfect games are record setting. Would you have pitchers throw underhanded to "give the hitters a chance?" I'm sure we have all heard of "hack a Shaq".Should a coach play an all out attacking style of soccer if he has a solid defense? All of this discussion just shows that maybe americans are not ready for soccer. Most "real" soccer games end with a very minimal amount of goals scored. The leading scorer in the EPL has 29 goals. The second place scorer is at 19. That's 8 months worth of soccer-not alot of goals.
Maybe games should end in a tie, but we had it that way a couple of years ago and an equal number of people were unhappy. If it comes down to pk's, then pk's are part of the game and coaches better practice for them. By the way, if you lose in pk's you got beat!

M*A*S*H,

I am not sure if these responses were intended for me? If so, here you go!!!

Quote:

I don't think pk's is the reason why soccer has taken so long to take roots.

I didn't say it was THE reason. I do think that when the "CHAMPIOHSHIP OF THE WORLD" is decided on PK's - it contributes to making soccer unattractive for the average sports fan in the United States.

Quote:

I don't think Dorman plays to make it to pk's. I think they play the very best teams thus the difficulty in scoring. See Hanna vs. Dorman

See my reply to p & y above.

Quote:

I do think there is a good bit of jealousy among a Lexington fan or two, NOT THE MAJORITY. Dorman plays great defense and has an average offense. They play up to 7 freshmen. Can you imagine what they'll do next year? They are well coached, work hard, have excellent chemistry, and handle adversity better than any team I've seen in the playoffs.

Invoking "jealousy" as a response to an opinion is myopic at best. I definitely agree with the rest of this quote.
