ive noticed that many ref's ahve been slack in calling hand balls this season and also the fact that many kids are cussing after getting fouled or when they dont like a call and th refs are hearing these things and not giving out cards or warning at least i mean if there are lil kids out there they dont need to hear these kinda words that players are shouting

Uh...yep. The refs are supposed to be cracking down on profanity and coaches were told that cards would be given out if the ref heard a profanity used, even if it wasn't directed at another player. Here is my question: Why the crackdown on soccer? If anyone thinks that there is not rampant use of profanity in football and basketball, please let us know. According to some recent statistics, 32% of all ejections in SC sports are soccer related. Something doesn't add up. # of players on football teams and coaches compared with soccer and # of schools with football and basketball programs vs ones with soccer. Could it be that soccer is taking it on the chin for no good reason? If the same rules applied to football as with soccer, half of the players of the teams would be ejected every game.

One would tend to think that profanity would unacceptable but.... what is profanity???? I thought I knew until someone got red carded for saying "unfreaking unbelievable".

OHHH! did I just use profanity? my apologies to all

Maybe the refs amongst us could comment as to the mandate.

The above statement sounds like teen speak to me.

Webster defines profane (which obviously we get prfoanity from) as to debase by a wrong, unworthy, or vulgar use.

By the way, nah...according to the FCC, you didn't use profanity. My arguement is to the enforcement of the rules. If one is not going to enforce the rules, why have them on the preverbial book.

Why don't we ask George Carlin?

Kids play sports because they find it fun. Eliminate the fun and soon you eliminate the kid.

You are right foul or abusive language should be punished with an appropirate card. However, in my experience if I gave a card was everytime some player uttered a four letter word their would be no one left to play many games! I try to use preventive refereeing by talking to players, while the game is going on, about the language they are using and remind them that it can be punished harshly at times. This usually quites the bad language and allows the game to go on without stopping for a card. However, if this does not work it must be carded!!!

As for the handball issue. It is up to the discretion of the referee to determine if it was intentional. I try to look at the body postion, arm postition and if the arm was moved to the ball before calling a handball (or handling, to be more correct). I laugh out loud often when I hear parents yelling "HANDBALL" everytime the ball touches any part of the arm.

Just a couple of thoughts. But remember that you too can be a referee and make positive changes in the way the game is refereed.

futbol,
Actually, if "unfreaking unbelievable" is said with just the right tone, it may result in a yellow. I don't know about a red for one occurrence.

Some copy and paste info on dissent-
These guidelines are intended to aid you in your individual games & to aid referees, as a group, to become more consistent in dealing with dissent.
1. Dissent should not be confused with mere disagreement, which does not reflect negatively on the official. A player can express a difference of opinion in a calm manner not involving dissent, treating this as any other question or statement by a player would be appropriate, unless it continues to the
point of becoming dissent.
2. Dissent, which is an emotional outburst (non-remeditated), short in duration, & not destructive to game control can be acknowledged, verbally or by gesture, by the referee, but, if it continues, or is repeated within a short time period, the player must be warned. Multiple occurrences by more than one player in a short time should also result in warnings.
3. Dissent, which is an emotional outburst (non-premeditated), but continues beyond the initial outburst,
or is potentially destructive to game control must result in a warning at least, depending on the other factors. Caution on the second occurrence. Send off on the third.
4. Dissent, which is premeditated (not the result of an emotional outburst) or is destructive to the game control must be cautioned. Send off on the second occurrence.
5. When dissent involves use of offensive, insulting or abusive language, punish the more serious of the offences (language) by sending off the player.
6. Dissent from Coaches must be treated in the same manner as players with the following differences;
Do not show a card.
Complete a match report. Do not put the incident on a misconduct report form.
Remember: Abusive dissent does not have to involve offensive or insulting language &, when it is directed toward your Assistant Referees, demands quick, firm action.

2004, your comment #6 about coaches is true for USSF soccer but in High School everyone including coaches are shown a card when it is necessary.
