Goal scored with approx. 2 mintues left in second OT. Great game! Nice goal by Morgan Thomas. CCES got behind the keeper 30 seconds after the goal was scored and missed an open goal. (Mark that down as things that give coaches ulcers). Very well played game by both teams considering the conditions (driving windy rain for almost the entire game).

Did our MC stud score 9 or 10 against Andrews?

I agree. If he leads this team to another region championship, I hope it's clear that he deserves the honor.

I've been increasingly hopeful concerning the changes I've seen from last year to this year, and from earlier this year to now, with respect to the Lexington team. Much less selfish play and much more looking for open players and trying to play faster and simpler. To me, the coach deserves the credit for leading this and the players for buying into it.

I hope that Airport, or one of our local teams can get the opportunity to knock off either one of the "sides" in a title game.<<

I think it's time to move the 4-A midlands teams to the lower state!!!

I really do agree with you on several points you make here. I agree that it's easier to focus on scoring. At the same time, for those kids that do it well in high school, I don't see any reason not to celebrate the fact that they did so -- but quite often context is missing with respect to what the other players did on the field. I'd love for someone from Marlboro County to get on and talk about how the team as a whole plays and helps Satoya Murray score so many goals -- because unfortunately I haven't seen her or her team play and have just read about it. In those games I do see, I try my best to focus on multiple players and team play -- but that's a vanishingly small percentage of the games out there.

By the way -- I think that there's confusion out there regarding "can a player play at the next level" and "celebrating high school accomplishments." There are not a lot of players out there who are going to play and make a significant impact at Division I schools when compared to the number of kids that have accomplishments that can be celebrated in and of themselves in the context of high school play.

Let's take high scoring forwards [note: I realize the irony given your earlier comments]. I've never seen Satoya play and don't know what club she plays for or whether she's in ODP. I've seen Caitlin play for years in club and ODP. Caitlin will play at the next level -- she's a very physically strong forward (she is kind of like Clemson's Jen Ficklen or Clemson's incoming Judea Davis (who also played forward along with Caitlin on the ODP-89 team) in terms of her style of play) with superb body positioning and instincts and is a very strong and accurate finisher. I know she can play against the top defenders because I've seen her do it for years against very strong competition. What position will she play at the next level? Don't know -- depends on the school and its needs -- but I wouldn't be surprised to see her at forward - with her size, strength, and finishing abilities it's a great position for her. I think her U17G Premier club teammates who also play forward in her team, Austin Fagan (forward, Riverside) and Sarah Jacobs (forward, Riverside) and Brentley Roberts (forward, Eastside) and Amberly Fowler (not playing high school) are also like Caitlin superb forwards who will play at the next level. Very different styles of play and yet all are very effective.

But I do get confused here in trying to decide what high school individual accomplishments we should and shouldn't honor. Some coaches allow 3 goals maximum to be scored; other coaches allow 0 goals to be recorded in blow-outs and don't record individual statistics; other coaches allow an infinite number of goals to be scored. Some coaches play a "kick it to one player" offense while other coaches build spread offenses. Some teams play in strong regions; some teams play in weak divisions. Some teams play in 4-A; some teams play in SCISA.

Sigh...it's confusing...so as I noted on another thread, I think it's a lot safer to celebrate the accomplishments where you find them and not try to analyze them too much...but that's just me...
