Did we ever figure out the reasoning for a player to score 9 goals in one game? I read something about "helping her team put an opponent away", but I think the opponent was already miles away. I'm not making any judgements, but I like hearing reasoning for abnormal occurences when possible. Might change my mind and my policy

Ryan Roseberry had a similar situation with Westside and Torey Lybrand. Weak competition, very talented player, and less skillful teammates. What was the most she scored in one game? I'm thinking it was 6 at most.

Torey Lybrand did score 6 goals for Westside on 2-3 different occasions. After the first time, she was limited to first half scoring and could only get assists in the 2nd.

There were numerous occasions, however, as W&E has explained with Caitlin Robinson, where Westside won close matches, 4-3, 3-2, etc. and Lybrand scored all of her team's goals. In these situations (a match decided by one or two goals), I think you let your scorer do her thing.

But I know firsthand from experiencing such a situation, strong player-weak team-some really weak opponents, that other coaches are careful to point out who she is scoring against and how many goals she is allowed to net against weaker competition. Thus, in the end, a coach has to keep himself honest (usually it is his doing, not the players) and make sure the "goals by one player against a weak opponent" is kept to a reasonable level.

It's not easy to reign in your thoroughbred when she's lighting up the back of the net against East Creampuff High, but building a better TEAM is the end goal of the coach.

What good was having a player who could score a ton of goals against really weak opponents when I faced a quality side? Not much. Look at Westside's 10-0 loss to Wren in 2006 for example. I think the focus for a coach with a team that is becoming competitive should be: increaded athleticism of the players, passing and creating space, and a greater tactical awareness on defense as a team. Those three things, plus a little club thrown in, are what make you more competitive in the end.

The 2007 Westside scores are much, much better this year than in 2006. It seems the team has come together tactically and the work load has been placed on many more shoulders this year. Curse the injury bug and boot ball.

Coach, which team would win in a head to head match? 06 or 07? Shining star vs. Team Westside?

I think this years Westside squad would beat the 06 side by about 5 goals if healthy, and by about 2 as is.

It would be interesting to look at which 07 sides have the biggest turnaround in goals for vs goals against from 06:

For example - Marlboro Co. 06 = -35, 07 = + 62
That's a 97 goal improvement!!! Geez!!

Seneca 06= -26 , 07 = -4 , 22 Goal improvement

Gaffney 06= -45, 07 = -19, 26 Goal improvement

Who else has made a big leap in the respectability category?

I'm sitting here looking at your stupid face to my left, OE. I'm debating kicking you out of my house.

I definitely like those statistics. Hopefully next year Seneca can make just as big an improvement. The main reason for the change isn't giving up less goals, but this year we actually have a decent offense. Hopefully next year we can shore up the defensive side of things with our goalie maturing from being a first year starter as a sophomore. We'll see though....... What scares me most is with the exception of Pickens, most of our region (region 1) is very young so I'm not the only one with bigger expectations for next season as well! Just look at our All region squad which consists of 6 seniors, 5 juniors, 4 sophomores and 3 freshman.
