When the boy from greenwood wanted to go to Byrnes to play football he was stopped because of the HSL transfer rules, i.e you are not zoned there so why are you changing if you are not moving?
Eventually this was resolved, but why is it any different than Sallie moving from Riverside to Greenville High School to play Volleyball without actually moving?
I would assume (YIKES!) that if district policy mandates transfers are ok, then the HSL has to follow suit.

No, really--I believe it. BE's reputation as an outstanding soccer program is incentive enough, I'm sure, without them having to go after players. Like I said, I've never seen any evidence to the contrary from that particular school. Can't blame them for putting the wide attendance area leeway granted to them by the HSL to good use. I still think, though, that to be fair, any school that competes in the High School League should be subject to the SAME attendance area restrictions as all the other competing schools--namely, a single-school attendance zone for athletes, not the option of a whole district or county. Or, for that matter, if it's ok for certain schools to play athletes from the entire county, then why can't ALL member schools declare the entire county as their athletic attendance zone? Wouldn't you love to see the row THAT would cause?

Let's not forget that Christ Church in the Upstate is parallel to BE—and I will add again, that private schools and open enrollment public schools benefit from the dynamic Coach Chass noted, their reps draw in students/players more so than they actually go out and recruit (though I'm sure that happens at some places and at some times since in Minnesota, a state with open enrollment in the whole state, there is ample evidence of recruiting and the problems it brings).

I assume the HSL and each school dist have coordination—Greenville county has had open enrollment for many years and I am not certain how that affects year-to-year eligibility—as in how often a player could switch high schools.
I do know from simply knowing families/players that it is common for players on soccer teams to choose to attend a high school that is not the one they are zoned for and they are completely eligible.
Per an earlier post—noting that even BE has to declare an attendance zone—I assume that since Greenville county allows open enrollment in all their schools that is the default attendance zone for sports, thus the HSL recognizes that—therein lies the inherent unfair aspects of an un-level playing field across the state.
In other words, a child in middle school in Greenville can choose among Eastside, Riverside, Mauldin, etc, and be fully within HSL parameters for eligibility. But in the adjoining county, Spartanburg which has seven distinct districts to Greenville's one, a middle schooler must attend the ONE high school for which he/she is zoned.
The same applies to athletes who choose CC in Greenville county or BE in Charleston.

I remember when "OE" stood for the name of the new TL Hanna girls varsity coach! 
Kids play sports because they find it fun. Eliminate the fun and soon you eliminate the kid.
