During the Euro 2008, England is where they deserve to be as a second rate soccer-playing nation: at home watching.

They have a great following and a league with teams that are great at buying and fielding alot of foreigners. But when the National Team must play with English players? Not good technically or tactically. So, that's players and coaches. (Let me add the EPL is good at buying good foreign coaches as well).

"Golden Generation" is a fraudulent term for these England players. What have they done? NOTHING! Their foreign-laiden club teams are OK but not because of them.

Since 1966, England has ONE World Cup semifinal and ONE Euro semifinal. And, missed MULTIPLE World Cups. Name a real soccer country with a resume that bad. You can't.

America, please get off the English and start idolizing a real soccer-playing country. Those accents your hear in the U.S. mean nothing....unless they are Italian, Brazilian or Argentinian.

I had to re-read the author of this post......

I originally thought it was Bazza!

Wow!

Isn't it great to be an American! We are such a combination of everything and everywhere. It always amazed me to be in another country and hear them talk of us. They admire us yet when trying to put the finger on who or what we are, it's a moving target.
You are correct in an accent may not equal success. But there is something in a (football) soccer rich country that cannot be denied. Knowledge base.
Funny idea...we all have an Euroasianlatinoafrican accent in a way don't we?

Yes but England has the passion and love for the game that no other country can compete with. And I think that is something very important.

England does have a great passion but that "no one can compete with?"

The marketing and visibility of English soccer in this country, again, gives a distorted view to Americans for a statement like that.

Brazil, Argentina and Italy, to name a few, are easily on the same lines as the English.

Yeah, but Brazil/Argentina/Italy can't keep fans safe and stadiums up to code...or their players at home.

Agreed on the stadiums and safety issues.

Players? Other then a handful, most top Italians do stay at home. For the obvious financial reasons, and NOT playing level, the Brazilians and Argentinians need to.

BUT, the topic is passion and love for the game. And that, England does not hold above those countries and others.

Actually, the topic is England not deserving to qualify for Euro 2008...

I'd rather see 1 EPL game than 10 in Argentina or Brazil. By the time you find a favorite, he's gone in January. Pick a team in England and you can enjoy him for years to come with one squad. Atmosphere and safety are more superb as well.

The last few exchanges were about passion and love of the game of the English over others. The overall topic of England not deserving to qualify? They didn't!

Overall, I'd prefer Argentinian and Brazilians matches because of the high level of technical ability. Outside of a combo of the top six or so teams in a match, the EPL is not quality soccer.
