Raptors, West Ashley soccer teams excelling in classroom
Philip M. Bowman, The Post and Courier

If you want to see some true student-athletes, check out the boys' and girls' soccer teams at Academic Magnet and the girls' squad at West Ashley. The three teams recently received the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Team Academic Award for exemplary performance in the classroom as a team during the 2006-07 academic year.

A total of 412 teams (154 boys, 258 girls) around the country were honored. Academic Magnet was one of only 61 schools to have both its boys and girls teams honored. The Academic Magnet girls' team, coached by Troy Bennage, was honored for its 3.86 grade-point average. The boys, also coached by Bennage, had a 3.74 grade-point average.

West Ashley, which has won three Class AAAA state titles this decade, also fares well in the classroom. Coach Drew McNeely's squad had a 3.50 GPA.

To qualify for the award, the team must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 for the entire academic year. The team GPA is determined by adding every player's grade-point average, then dividing by the number of players.

Other South Carolina girls' teams earning the honor were Brookland-Cayce, Byrnes, Christ Church, Dorman, Irmo, Spartanburg and Wade Hampton of Greenville.

The other boys' teams honored were Brookland-Cayce, Byrnes, Chapin, Crestwood, Dorman, Dutch Fork and T.L. Hanna, Irmo and Mauldin.

Soccer polls

The South Carolina High School Soccer Coaches Association has released its preseason polls, and the Lowcountry is well-represented as four teams hold the top spots in the polls: Wando girls in Class AAAA, Bishop England girls in Class AA-A, Bishop England boys in Class AA and Pinewood Prep boys in SCISA. All four schools are defending state champions.

In boys' AAAA, Wando is seventh and Summerville is eighth.

In boys' Class A, Academic Magnet is No. 2 and Lincoln is fifth. In SCISA boys, Porter-Gaud is fourth.

Summerville is ninth in girls' Class AAAA, while West Ashley is No. 10. Hilton Head is third in girls' Class AAA. Academic Magnet is fifth in girls' Class AA-A, while Hilton Head Prep heads up the SCISA girls' poll. Hilton Head Christian is fifth.

Area Briefs
Spartanburg Herald Journal

A couple of local soccer teams were named in the South Carolina High School Soccer Coaches Association preseason polls that were released on Saturday.

The highest-ranked local team was Dorman's girls, who are ranked No. 3 in the 4A poll. Spartanburg's girls aren't far behind at No. 6.

Dorman's boys are ranked fifth in the 4A poll, while Broome's boys are No. 10 in the 2A poll.

Woodruff's girls, who played for the state title last spring, are ranked sixth.

Soccer practice begins on Monday.

Congratulations to Josh and nice piece from Mr. Van Hart.

Definitely got a smirk out of me.
