Raptors, West Ashley soccer teams excelling in classroom Philip M. Bowman, The Post and Courier
If you want to see some true student-athletes, check out the boys' and girls' soccer teams at Academic Magnet and the girls' squad at West Ashley. The three teams recently received the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Team Academic Award for exemplary performance in the classroom as a team during the 2006-07 academic year.
A total of 412 teams (154 boys, 258 girls) around the country were honored. Academic Magnet was one of only 61 schools to have both its boys and girls teams honored. The Academic Magnet girls' team, coached by Troy Bennage, was honored for its 3.86 grade-point average. The boys, also coached by Bennage, had a 3.74 grade-point average.
West Ashley, which has won three Class AAAA state titles this decade, also fares well in the classroom. Coach Drew McNeely's squad had a 3.50 GPA.
To qualify for the award, the team must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 for the entire academic year. The team GPA is determined by adding every player's grade-point average, then dividing by the number of players.
Other South Carolina girls' teams earning the honor were Brookland-Cayce, Byrnes, Christ Church, Dorman, Irmo, Spartanburg and Wade Hampton of Greenville.
The other boys' teams honored were Brookland-Cayce, Byrnes, Chapin, Crestwood, Dorman, Dutch Fork and T.L. Hanna, Irmo and Mauldin.

All four schools are defending state champions.
In boys' AAAA, Wando is seventh and Summerville is eighth.
In boys' Class A, Academic Magnet is No. 2 and Lincoln is fifth. In SCISA boys, Porter-Gaud is fourth.

Congratulations to Josh and nice piece from Mr. Van Hart.
"I don't really know what my coaching style is yet," Taylor said.
Definitely got a smirk out of me.
