Eastside boys even things up
Bob Castello, Greater Greer News

The Eastside and Riverside boys soccer teams have split their first two meetings this season, but each figures to see the other -- or an opponent of similar caliber -- again when it counts.

Eastside defeated Riverside 2-0 on Monday night in the first of two Peach Blossom AAA Region matches. Riverside beat Eastside by the same score in the Byrnes Invitational on Feb. 21. The teams will play at Eastside on April 24.

"It's typical," Eastside coach David Craig said. "Eastside's gonna run into Greenville, or Riverside, or Daniel, or Mann, and it's always gonna be tough. Since I've been at Eastside, somebody's run into one of the others, somewhere along the way, early in the playoffs."

Eastside, No. 5 in Class AAA entering the week, played back-to-back matches against the top teams in Class AAAA (Spring Valley) and AAA (Riverside). Undefeated Spring Valley defeated Eastside 4-3 in overtime Saturday in the Palmetto Cup.

"Honestly, we had that won," Craig said. "Up until the final minute of the game, it was 2-2. Sometimes things don't quite work out.

"It was very good for us to get down there and get into that highly competitive nature of that field at the Palmetto Cup to lead us into this (week) with Riverside and then Mann on Thursday."

Riverside's loss was its first of the season.

"We got the surprise on them the first time," Riverside coach Brian Dender said. "They definitely came out (Monday night) much better, much more organized, and surprised us.

"In two weeks we see them again, and the important one is playoffs, just like a couple years ago when Greenville was dominating everybody and got to the playoffs, and we shocked them. I think the state title race is gonna be between these two teams when it comes to the playoffs."

No. 1 Red Raiders turn back Devildogs
http://greenvilleonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080408/PREPSPORTS/804080349
Bob Castello, Greenville News

Greenville High's boys soccer team entered Monday night's match with the burden of the state's No. 1 ranking in Class AAA.

Then Travelers Rest put a little more pressure on the Red Raiders before falling 5-2 in a Western AAA Region game at Sirrine Stadium.

"It adds a little pressure," Greenville coach Kevin Traynor said of the No. 1 ranking. "It's a good compliment. I don't know if we really deserve it right now, but the guys are definitely coming in here with it on their minds."

The Raiders (13-2, 8-0) took the lead on first-half goals by Michael Padgett and Gregory Sanders. When Saul Escalona split a pair of defenders and scored eight minutes into the second half, Greenville led 3-0.

But Allan Turner put TR (7-5, 5-3) on the board, and James Restrepo added a breakaway goal in the 69th minute to pull the Devildogs within one.

Manning Rushton's goal with a little more than two minutes remaining gave the Raiders a cushion, and then Rushton blasted a shot from about 35 yards out that made it 5-2.

"A lot of teams that get down 3-0 to the number one team in the state might give up, but we didn't, and I'm very proud of that," TR coach Chris McCarrell said.

In the girls game, Ali Lewis scored one goal and assisted on another as Greenville rolled to a 3-0 victory. The eighth-ranked Red Raiders (9-2, 8-0) maintained sole possession of first place in the Western AAA Region.

Emilie Tollison's header, with an assist from Jacquelyn Muse, provided the only goal of the first half. Lewis scored in the 43rd minute and then assisted on Reed Few's goal that gave the Raiders a 3-0 lead in the 64th minute.

"Every time we've played them the last three years it went into penalty kicks," said Tollison, a senior midfielder. "We were like, 'We're gonna make history today. We're not gonna go into PKs.' "

TR (6-6, 4-4) beat Greenville on penalty kicks in the teams' first meeting this season.

"In the first game we were so inexperienced in the back, and we made a lot of mistakes in the back," Greenville coach Raimond Hartmann said. "We changed the system a little bit, and we play Olivia (Francis) as a sweeper, and that makes a big difference."

Youngest family member gets her kicks on field
Airport's Cassie Shumpert, left, is the youngest of three cousins playing on the Eagles varsity team. Cassie Shumpert has six goals and six assists this season, her first at the varsity level.

The starting lineup for the Airport Eagles reads like the introduction to a film called Meet the Shumperts.

There are cousins Courtney Shumpert, a senior, at forward and another senior, Heather Shumpert, at defender. And then there is the newest member: freshman midfielder Cassie Shumpert.

After two years at the junior varsity level, Shumpert is proud to join her cousins on the varsity squad. Their presence, especially Courtneys, has made the transition easier.

Our dads are brothers, so Courtney and I grew up together and I was comfortable having her on the team, said Cassie Shumpert. She just told me to play my best and she has been encouraging me all through the season.

Though the cousins have not always played soccer together, coach Keith Morris said it is natural that Cassie Shumpert take her cues from her older cousins now that they are on the team together.

Its not competition between them. Cassie looks up to Courtney and I think shes trying to catch up with her, and maybe earn her respect, Morris said.

Cassie Shumpert is a strong little player by her own rites, Morris said. But, she still works hard to distinguish herself.

Hopefully I can make a name for myself because I know that Courtney is very good, Cassie Shumpert said. It is a challenge to be as good as Courtney.

Cassie is doing good job of it. So far, she has tallied six goals and six assists for the Eagles.

In last weeks game against rival Brookland-Cayce, Cassie Shumpert scored the game-winning goal.

Write that down.

Last name Shumpert.

First name C-A-S-S-I-E.
