Can't believe this, but I am going to agree with Shibumi on something. "Pearce and Andrew believe they know how to operate a soccer club better than anyone else in SC" - Self belief can be confidence (which is good) or when taken to extremes it can be delusional. I think Pearce, Andrew and CESA are delusional about their superiority...The laughs keep coming..thanks Shibumi...CESA is a brand...just can't get over that...

Brand name recognition usually equates to marketing a product so that you generate more revenue. This usually results in greater income to the stockholders. In this case, two primary stockholders.

galaxy9: I guess it's your choice that you completely ignored the numbers that apparently refute your point regarding CESA being a joke other than at the "elite" level...but I'd appreciate it if you actually quoted me accurately. Here's what I said:

My guess is that they believe that they know how to operate a youth soccer club better than anyone else in South Carolina -- not just because of CESA but because of their individual success at SGU and GFC.

It may be that I'm deluded, but my "guesses" are in no way attributable to their own beliefs.

Regarding whether CESA is a "brand", it's my guess that you actually aren't arguing as to whether it is a strict "brand" (which basically means a label or symbol of ownership) and whether it is in fact a concept that can be publicly distinguished from other concepts (in this case, whether the acronym "CESA" can be publicly distinguished from other soccer club names.) A quick search of this message board, or for that matter the Georgia or North Carolina message boards, for CESA versus other club names or acronyms should help you with this.

Several notes. First, I think what you mean to say is that branding is a tool or function that is typically used to distinguish a product, concept, or service to publicly distinguish another product, concept, or service for the purposes of marketing. That marketing seeks to maximize return on investment both for the creation of the product, concept, or service and the investment made in the branding and marketing itself.

Secondly, I think that marketing is important for youth soccer clubs. I know I'll take a shot for this, but I think that the best youth soccer club in South Carolina at marketing is CUFC. I don't say that in a pejorative sense but as an extreme compliment -- I think that CUFC is absolutely brilliant at it. I believe that CUFC is the only youth soccer club other than CESA that has any attempt at all to create a brand and market it.

Third, CESA and SSC are 501(c)(3) organizations and as such do not have stock or stockholders in the sense that typical for-profit corporations do.

I mean this very, very respectfully; but I doubt that almost anyone is really neutral in this. Parents with children that play at CESA, or CUFC, or Bridge, or SSC all have various motivations. I think it's a tad disingenuous to question the motives of others without thinking perhaps a bit more about our own personal motives.

I suppose I was, hyper-technically, "questioning their motives." Of course the question was quite clearly qualified. The question was in no way accusatory. I remain interested in knowing why achieving the stated goals (improving the performance of SSC) requires the identity change. Your response didn't really answer that.

So you don't misunderstand my position, to the extent that I have one, as the parent of an "elite" player, I would probably vote in favor of the arrangement. Of course, my child would probably already be at Bridge, FA (assuming he made the team) if SSC wasn't providing the experience he/we wanted.

Let's start from the top with the proper context.

>>[HappyDaddy] [...] I have to wonder why Tormey and Hyslop couldn't advise SSC on how to do better at what it wants to do, without making it CESA-Charleston. If their motivation is to improve the quality of youth soccer in South Carolina, and at SSC in particular, why does it necessarily have to involve importing the CESA "brand?" There may be perfectly good reasons that it does, they just aren't apparent to me.<<

>>[HappyDaddy] [...] I remain interested in knowing why achieving the stated goals (improving the performance of SSC) requires the identity change. Your response didn't really answer that.<<

>>[Shibumi] [...] My further guess is that they believe that there are a number of ways to effect change and that SSC must change to be successful. Finally, my last guess is that they believe that the best and fastest way to effect that change involves more than consultancy but includes operational change and branding.

Here's the part of my response where I tried (and clearly failed) to respond:

[... being a] consultant doesn't translate into true strategic and tactical change -- the only thing that translates into that is executive leadership that is willing to introduce change into organizations in which different results are desired. It's my guess that they know this -- but it's just a guess...<<

Consultant came from your term "advise" in your first sentence; I theorized that they believed they had to do more than advise (or in my parlance, consult.) I theorized that they believe that the best and fastest way to effect change involves operational change and branding.

Now...what you want is a specific response to one phrase of one sentence in your posting, to wit:

>>[HappyDaddy] [...] why does it necessarily have to involve importing the CESA "brand?<<

I'll guess one more time. My guess is that they are requiring a rebranding for the same reasons any company does; to signal externally and internally a different set of values, operating procedures, etc. and to leverage the name recognition and accomplishments associated with any past brand (in this case, "CESA".) In other words, I'm guessing that it's their belief that this is the fastest and best way to effect the change.

None of my guesses are based on anything other than what companies typically do. And all of my guesses are worth what you pay for them. Are my guesses viable for this situation? Yes. Are the accurate for this situation? I have not a clue. But you asked for perfectly good reasons, so I thought I'd provide you the typical reasoning behind name changes in companies, products, services, or concepts.

Referencing quotes works both ways, and I put your quote in absolute context, sorry I did not add the last sentence which does not change the concept that "Pearse and Andrew believe they know how to run a youth soccer program better than anyone else." You however, missed mine. I said CESA -Columbia was a joke. The hundreds of kids from the SOAR league were there long before CESA. I guess CESA got religion too from what I hear...coaches being required to fill out prayer cards...nice touch

galaxy9: Actually, you took a sentence, changed it, and attributed it to me. Let me give you an example. It's like my saying that the sentence "My guess is that A" and the sentence "A." One is a statement in which I ascribe make a guess, the other is purported as a statement of fact.

P.S. I edited this post to try to make it more collegial.

P.P.S.

CESA - 12 (8 Premier; 4 Challenge)
CUFC - 8
Bridge - 3
FSCG - 2
LCSC - 2
CUSC - 1
CFC - 1

Pretty amazing, right? Two years in a row. Hard to attribute that to being only focused on elite teams, isn't it?
